Rolls Royce / Bentley Corniche Coupe Series 1A.
Fabulous Corniche in tip top condition, converted from a Rolls to full Bentley specification (instruments and rocker covers, etc.). This was the very first car ever made by Rolls to feature electronic ignition, in consequence, it never fails to start. Everything works. No rust on body work or underside bar the odd tiny patch on parts of the valence, if one was being unnecessarily picky. Being a Series 1, it features chrome bumpers; being designated an 'A', it has the upgraded interior with the superior heating system (all working). Headrests on all seats (rare as hen's teeth on a Series 1). The most ridiculously sumptuous black lambswool over-rugs (£600). Upgraded Cibie headlamps - turn night into day! Harvey Bailey suspension upgrade: front and rear.
Paintwork in immaculate condition. Engine purrs beautifully with a discreet hint of a V8 roar, powering the car along at speeds up to 130mph - abroad, obviously!
Woodwork in gleaming condition, (no belt chips on door caps). Leather everywhere, including the headlining, and all virtually unmarked. Given a good valet, this car could be mistaken for coming straight from a showroom, and yet it's 41 years old! Tax free. Used regularly except when salt has been applied to the roads during winter.
History showing tens of thousands spent over the decades. I've owned it for seven years and it's been blooming marvellous. I absolutely love it, but narrow Dorset lanes and a long unmade, muddy track is not its natural habitat!
These cars are THE MOST underrated cars on the market today. Two door Roycers for the price of a modern hatchback! It won't stay that way for long... These cars were built to a specification of reliability, not to a price. That means that whilst your friend's Aston or Ferrari will look fabulous in their garage, that's where it'll stay. I know, my mate uses my Bentley rather than his Aston because, as he says 'the Aston will get you there in style, but back on a trailer!' (Update: my mate has sold his Aston and bought a Bentley!) The Bentley on the other hand, will always start, will always work and will always get you where you want to go and back home again. Another friend of mine regularly drives his flying B fourteen miles into the Scottish highlands up a mountain track!
I would have no hesitation to jump in this car and drive it down to the South of France. The engine is a 6. 75litre V8 lump that gets maximum torque at ridiculously low revs, it's 1920s pushrod technology, so no timing chains to stretch, or no belts or other wonderfully fancy bits to break. It's just keeps going, going and going... this is not a car to be tucked away in a garage and used three times a year, it's a car to be used every dry day the weather permits, it's a driver's car. Buy with confidence and drive away into the Côte d'Azure sunset.
