Description
For sale is my 1995 Ford Explorer 4WD automatic petrol with just over 140, 000 miles on the clock. I purchased this car last Summer as a project to work on and I've carried out a lot of work to make improvements but sadly I no longer have time to spend on this as I have several other cars that need attention. The car has just been through it's MOT and isn't due again until late January 2019.
The exterior of the car is presentable, having replaced both rear 'dog leg' sections of the bodywork and having replaced the right hand front wing. Having done this, the new wing will need it's pin stripe replacing and if you were being picky you may wish to have the dog leg sections professionally painted - although they've been coated for protection and look absolutely fine as they are. I've also managed to clean and coat the rear arches. The exterior plastics are a little faded and there are usual imperfections on the paint as you would expect from a now 23 year old car. I cannot stress how solid the underneath of the car is, both the chassis and the underbody are strong, any inspection under the car is welcome. The leaf springs, rear axle and chassis legs all have the usual surface rust but I decided not to coat over these so potential buyers can fully inspect for themselves. There was a couple of small rust scabs by the fuel filler cap which I have tried my best to treat and touch in to improve the overall look of the car. The side steps were also replaced with factory side skirts and freshly painted to match the car. Four good all terrain tyres with plenty of tread.
The interior of the car is in good condition. There is a small rip on the drivers seat base about an inch long, some marks to the carpet underneath the rear seats and some imperfections on the roof lining but none of these points detract from the overall good condition of the interior. The boot cover seems to have recently lost its spring action but I'm sure it can be fixed. The radio works fine, the cruise control works fine, the heaters blow nice hot and last summer the air con was ice cold but I have not checked it since. The gears are selected via a column mounted shifter.
I have carried out a lot of maintenance work to the car in mechanical terms:
Fit new EGR pressure feedback sensor
Fit new thermostat and new gasket
Fix leak on rear diff cover and refill with fresh oil
Fit new fuel filter
Fit new spark plugs
Fit new spark plug leads
Fit new air filter
Fit new oil filter
Change engine oil
Change engine coolant
Fit new intake gaskets, full set including lower gasket / fuel rail gasket / upper gasket etc
Clean throttle body
Clean MAF
Overall the car drives well, the engine pulls strong and the gearbox shifts as I would expect it to. The brakes bring the car to a nice stop and work as I would expect. Occasionally, if the throttle is applied very hard from standstill, you can feel a split second delay but this does not affect the overall drive of the car and is non existent under normal smooth driving conditions - it may well be normal trying to shift a heavy car off the line? When the car was purchased, the 4WD light would flash on the dashboard indicating a fault. I investigated this and believe it to be a faulty transfer case motor (£50 brand new part) but I simply have not had the time to carry out this repair. They are easy to swap as they are simply bolted to the outside of the transfer case, however in order to stop the annoying lights flashing, I have simply unplugged the motor. The car drives perfectly in 2WD. If I were to keep the car I would be fixing this next. There is also a faint blow on the exhaust somewhere in the middle of the system but to be honest it isn't worth bothering with as it's hardly noticeable. This model is fitted with the earlier pushrod/ OHV engine that is known for being virtually bomb proof.
I have lots of parts that will be included in the sale. Second hand parts include headlights, tail lights, side steps, two part worn tyres etc. Brand new parts include two genuine motorcraft transmission pan filters, differential damper and front upper arm camber bolts.
Overall the car is fantastic and scarce being a genuine left hand drive US import with column shift. Any inspection and test drive is welcome. Located in WS9 area of West Midlands. The price reflects the rarity, condition and money/ time that's been invested over the last 7-8 months but I may listen to sensible offers.
FINAL PRICE DROP TO CLEAR. IF CAR DOES NOT SELL I WILL DECLARE CAR SORN AND RELIST IN SUMMER.
