The Appeal
It’s perhaps not surprising to discover that just 506 of Rolls-Royce’s elegantly named Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward convertibles were hand-built between 1967 and 1970. It took five months to make each one, and you needed deep pockets: the £12,079 cost (£170,000 now) was the equivalent of two Silver Shadows.
Of the handful of cars built, just 200 or so were configured in LHD like this lovely two-tone 6.75L car. Chassis DRX 9212 is one of the final examples produced, commissioned in April 1970 to the specification of its first owner in Ohio, complete with Sundym glass, top-tint front screen, and a chrome fire extinguisher — all of which remain with the car. Build records and the original shipping invoice from October 1970 accompany the vehicle, lending it a tangible connection to its origins. It subsequently spent 10 years in Florida before returning to the UK in 2016. We’re told that it has been repainted during its life, now presented in a stylish silver-over-blue combination with a matching blue roof and blue leather interior.
The vendor acquired the car in 2024 and immediately dispatched it to marque specialist Mark Taylor for a thorough mechanical overhaul costing in excess of £20,000. The full scope of this work is detailed below. The investment was put to the test in 2024 when the car was driven from the UK to the Algarve, toured Portugal and southern Spain, and driven home again — over 2,000 miles with the hood down.
There are a number of minor electrical items requiring attention, and the paintwork shows some age-consistent marks, as outlined in the detail below. This is a car that rewards use and would benefit from continued sympathetic care — a rare and increasingly collectable Mulliner Park Ward convertible with proven long-distance ability.
The vendor says:
“The car was driven from owner's home in the UK to their home in the Algarve in 2024. They toured Portugal and southern Spain before driving back to the UK, covering over 2,000 miles with the hood down! The car is in good overall condition but would benefit from some further TLC. Selling as the import tax to Portugal is excessive, so purchasing a Portuguese-registered Rolls-Royce.”
