Pre-pujas

1971 MG MGB GT

Highlights

  • Wonderfully appealing example of the quintessential British sporting MG
  • Fitted with a host of upgrades and previously restored
  • High specification described by a previous owner as “a baby Aston Martin”
  • Mileage of just 30,324 miles reported as correct
  • Eligible for MOT exemption and ULEZ-compliant

The Appeal

The MGB GT was a masterstroke for the British Motor Corporation, combining the proven mechanical package of the popular MGB with elegant Pininfarina-penned fastback bodywork. The result was a practical and stylish grand tourer that broadened the appeal of the traditional British sports car and remains one of the most recognisable classics of its era.

This example stands apart thanks to its remarkably low mileage and extensive programme of refurbishment and improvement. Finished in an exceedingly attractive colour, it benefits from a carefully considered selection of upgrades designed to enhance both performance and usability.

These include an uprated 1,840cc engine, a five-speed gearbox and revised suspension, while accompanying invoices document more than £25,000 of expenditure between 1992 and the present day. Loved by the seller for its condition, driving manners and performance, it offers a compelling blend of classic MGB character and thoughtful modernisation.

The vendor says:

"With a very high specification and a file full of invoices to back up the history from 1988 onwards, this MGB GT was purchased as a project in the early 1990s by the previous owner, who completed a programme of restoration and upgrades whilst spending a small fortune, in order to end up with a fine sports car which has been likened to a ‘baby Aston Martin’.
"Since bought at auction in 2024, I have added to an already exhaustive list of mechanical and bodywork improvements with the end result being an excellent driver’s car which both looks, handles and performs far in excess of the average MGB GT available elsewhere and which therefore provides an unmissable opportunity to own this highly specified yet practical classic."

  • All non-return valves have been replaced
  • Toggle catch to nearside rear, opening quarter vent does not fully lock shut
  • A few, very minor body blemishes commensurate with the car's age and usage as noted in the images
The vendor says:

"The vehicle does present very well and turns heads, bearing in mind it is 55 years old and restored some time ago. I would describe the overall condition to be somewhere between Grade 2 (Excellent) and Grade 3 (Very Good). With all the ‘bells and whistles’ as noted above, which at today’s costs would be prohibitively expensive to reproduce, this MGB GT provides an opportunity to own a fabulous driver’s car with no expense spared.
