The Appeal
With demand and values for the firm’s SL series constantly high, canny enthusiasts are gravitating to this car, the W114 coupe. Pillarless Paul Bracq styling plus spacious four-seat practicality, these handsome cars are very usable and the style equal of those ‘Sport Leicht’ models.
This 1972 250CE is one of the nicest we’ve seen in a long while. It is fitted with the M114 2.5L fuel-injected straight-six engine and is highly original. The vendor tells us that it has never been restored and never welded. We can’t confirm that, but the photos appear to support it. The condition across the white paintwork and attractive blue MB Tex interior is impressive.
We are told that the car was originally sold new in Jersey, spending its life there until 1991 when it moved to the UK. It subsequently spent time in Northern Ireland before joining a marque enthusiast’s collection in 2019 and then was little-used. The vendor acquired the car in 2024 and quickly set about an extensive recommissioning process costing close to £4,000. That work included a gearbox overhaul, full service plus work to the brake and suspension systems. It was also fitted with a £600 bespoke stainless steel exhaust.
The car is naturally MOT exempt but there is a useful recent MOT from May 2024 that shows no advisories. The car has covered few miles since that test.
The vendor says:
“These rare coupes have the understated elegance and rarity that the SL cannot match. The engine, transmission and suspension is virtually the same but with a smoother gliding ride, more room and of course back seats. With the electric roof open and all the windows down this pillarless coupe has all the benifits af a convertible without the drawbacks. With the powerful, smooth 6 cylinder engine, silky smooth auto, power steering and brakes, it is so easy to drive in modern traffic. They are such beautiful cars to just look at and even better to drive, and I had always wanted a Mercedes Coupe and have now satisfied that longing.”

The vendor says:
“The car is over 50 years old, so there is some wear, such as very slight scuffing of the driver's seat squab, but the rest of the upholstery remains unfaded, deep blue MB tex. And the clock doesn't work, but it may be an easy fix. This car is such a time warp survivor I just had to own her. Since my acquisition and reconditioning, I have covered only a few hundred admittedly enjoyable miles, keeping up with modern traffic easily with ample, smooth power, power steering, a supple ride, good handling, and seamless gear shifts, not to mention the sunroof. My only reason for offering her for sale is that my own collection has exceeded my garaging limit. I always had an itch for a classic early Mercedes Coupe and have now satisfied that particular yearning. She is absolutely ready to enjoy, show or just admire.”
