Description

Jaguar Kougar Reg No: EFJ 163C Chassis No: 059

The car was built by Mr Ashley Coleman-Cooke who lived in Surrey. He ordered the car from Rick Stevens after visiting the factory on 1st January 1982. A British Racing Green body with black trim was ordered along with full weather equipment. The history file with the car includes original Kougar brochure, correspondence and all bills and MOT’s since the build to now. The donor 1964 Jaguar S type 3. 8L with overdrive on 4th gear having previously been purchased on 31st October 1981 for £165. This was mechanically refurbished while waiting for the chassis and body to be delivered in June 1982. The car was put on the road in August 1982. Logbook declares manufactured 1964, date of first registration 01/ 11/ 1979, three keepers since 1979.

Mr Coleman-Cooke was an early member of the Kougar Owners Club (KOC) and took part in club events with his Kougar. He moved north to Teesside in the late 1980’s. Various modifications were done to it over the later years including spin on oil filter assembly, oil cooler mounted in the nose, modified exhaust with tubular manifold, straight port head from a Mark X Jaguar fitted with triple SU carburettors, Spax adjustable shock absorbers, Pacet 2300CFM electric fan etc.

The car became little used and was put up for sale in 2004/ 5. An acquaintance of mine purchased it having seen it being MOT’d at the local garage. I purchased it from him one month later in July 2005 with 18, 861 miles on the clock. I have steadily been improving the car in my ownership, this includes re-coring the radiator adding an extra 20%, fitting knock on hubs with painted new MWS wire wheels, rather than the Wolfrace alloy wheels which the car was built with. New custom made stainless steel silencer to look like the C type racing ones. Wind deflectors on the ends of the windscreen etc.

In 2007 the engine nipped the number 5 piston due to blocked waterways in the block. This is a common problem on XK engines that have been little used as I later found out. I removed the engine and decided that I would send it away to Vintage Sports Engines (VSE) for a full rebuild. I had it built to their VSE 2 spec which included fitting of flanged liners, fully lightened and balanced, different cams, competition clutch, conversion to alternator etc. This took several months so while the car was off the road various jobs were done on it including Facet high capacity fuel pump, painting the chassis, fitting removable chassis bobbin under the sump and sump guard, hi-torque starter motor etc.

The front suspension has been rebuilt including powder coating various components and fitting new Spax shocks. The braking system uses DOT 5 fluid to avoid water absorption. The fuel tank has been coated inside and outside to protect from modern fuels.

The car has a removable hood frame, hood and side screens that are kept in the boot accessed by removing the seat back. It also has a two piece tonneau cover and indoor car cover.

The car has a few stars in the fibreglass as shown in the pictures but otherwise is in very good condition. Current MOT runs out 02/ 05/ 24 and has covered 38, 256 miles since build (approximately 15, 377 since full VSE engine build) and has only done 1, 947 miles since July 2019. Therefore I have decided to sell as it gets little use due to other commitments and vehicles.

Comes with various spares including brand new boxed MWS wire wheel, tools, KOC past magazines, Book on “The History of Kougar Sports Cars” by Amy Robbs & Paul Biggs where the bodyshell is pictured on page 77 being collected in June 1982.
