Description
A staple of the British classic car scene, the MGB first appeared in open form in 1962. Initially it was intended that a coupe version should follow shortly afterwards but, such was the demand for the roadster, the Pininfarina styled GT did not finally break cover until 1965.
The MGB was always a combination of the new and the old. Its unitary construction was a step on from previous MGs and also a step ahead of arch rivals Triumph. Components such as the B-Series engine, however, were well established by the time they appeared in the ‘B. The mixture ultimately proved a successful one – the car remained in production until 1980.
This 1974 example has never been restored and, with 96, 000 miles on the clock, understandably shows one or two signs of a life well lived. It has, however, always been diligently maintained and still presents well in its original Citron over Black. It was equipped from new with the four speed plus overdrive transmission and is largely standard, the only two notable deviations from original specification being the fitment of electronic ignition and the Minilite alloy wheels it currently wears. The original Rostyle items come with the car.
The standout feature of this car is undoubtedly its comprehensive history file. Beginning with the original service book, this weighty tome also encompasses a brochure plus numerous invoices for work and parts, both from when it was still a modern car and more recent ones from well known classic suppliers such as Moss, The MGB Hive and MGOC Spares. There is a list of previous owners with, in many cases, dates of ownership and mileage covered. Another thorough list covers details of work done on the car over the years. MOT Certificates are present in abundance and a BMIHT Heritage Certificate crowns the documentation.
Some may regard the MGB as too predictable a classic choice, but its combination of lively performance, mechanical simplicity and huge parts supply make it hard to dismiss, whether one is a classic motoring novice or a seasoned collector looking for a less challenging companion to more exotic machinery.
