Description

My 1986 5 Series BMW 518i (E28) is a solid and mechanically refreshed example of BMW’s iconic ‘80s executive saloon. It’s a 5-speed manual model with 145, 000 miles on the clock and has benefited from a full engine rebuild just 2, 600 miles ago.

Mechanically, it’s in excellent shape: a stainless steel exhaust centre and backbox, four new tyres, new springs, and new front discs and pads, have all been fitted recently. Underneath the car has been welded and professionally rust protected with a Dinitrol underseal, and bodywork and welding have been taken care of to a good standard. It just passed its MOT - valid until May 2026 at which point this car will be over 40 years old and will be tax/ MOT exempt.

Inside, the car retains its original cloth trim in good condition. The only notable wear is a tear in the driver’s seat bolster but otherwise the cabin is clean, functional, and benefits from some discreet improvements. The dashboard and gauges have been restored and now work fully. Sound deadening has been added in the boot and engine bay to improve refinement.

There’s also a modern stereo system with AUX connectivity, amp under the passenger seat, upgraded speakers and subwoofer – all tastefully fitted without compromising the period look. A lifetime GPS tracker (Scorpion DataTool), alarm, and immobiliser has been professionally installed for added peace of mind, which comes with a certificate recognised by insurance companies.

Mechanically, it runs and drives very smoothly. The M10 engine has its typical light tappet noise, which it had before and after the rebuild – it’s well known for this trait and it’s not a concern.

No immediate work is required. The car is structurally solid, dependable, and would make an ideal weekend cruiser, daily driver, or base for light cosmetic enhancement if desired. I bought this E28 about 5 years ago because I’ve always admired the timeless shark-nose styling, analogue driving feel, and bulletproof engineering of the 80s era BMW. It’s the kind of car that makes you smile every time you glance back at it after parking. This one stood out to me because it looked great, is manual, and I’ve enjoyed investing in getting it into such solid mechanical shape.

What makes it special is that it’s still understated – no massive wheels or slammed suspension – just a clean, honest classic with a lovely presence on the road. It gets appreciative nods without shouting for attention. The engine rebuild gives huge peace of mind, and the subtle modern additions make it genuinely usable.

My favourite part is how well it drives – smooth, composed, and with that classic BMW steering feel. It has the charm of a 1980s saloon but without the stress of something fragile.

I’m only selling because I want to start work on my family’s Series III Land Rover – a project with sentimental value that’s been passed down to me. This E28 has had its turn, and now it’s time for someone else to enjoy it.
