Stunning two seat open-top sporting Bentley, with removable aluminium hardtop.
Completely unique, beautifully made, two door aluminium sports bodywork, hand crafted on an English Wheel.
This beautiful body is mounted on a matching numbers 1954 Bentley R-Type chassis, being completely nut and bolt restored to concours standard, whilst totally retaining its factory built integrity and mechanical originality.
Mechanical specification:
The original 6 cylinder engine has been totally restored. Crack and pressure tested, with new cylinder liners and 4. 9 Omega pistons. New main, big end and little end bearings. New camshaft, valves, guides, valve seats and springs. New rocker shaft, rockers and tappets. Overhauled oil pump. Overhauled pressure relief valve. Overhauled spring drive, (crankshaft damper). New water gallery. New water pump. Rebuilt twin SU Carburettors, painted and plated to original standard. The engine presenting in beautiful condition, with new paint and plating as per original. Bracket for alternator and aircon compressor fitted to engine (alternator already fitted).
To prevent clutch judder, now fitted with the improved one piece flywheel and modern diaphram clutch.
The chassis frame has been double shot blasted, etch primed, and finished in satin black two-pack paint. All chassis components aqua blasted, etch primed and finished in two-pack satin black.
Gearbox completely rebuilt, with heavy front thrust washer, and square wall bearings throughout. Brake servo motor rebuilt.
New front propeller shaft, and rebuilt rear section.
New stainless twin pipe sports exhaust system, with tubular stainless manifolds.
Rear axle totally rebuilt to latest specification. New pinion modified to Timken bearings matched to a new crown wheel with 13:40 (3. 08) Continental ratio. New side bearings. Modified hub bearings to latest specification.
New front road springs. All new front suspension and steering joints. Rear leaf springs re-tempered to correct ride height. New shackle bushes. Overhauled front and rear dampers.
Brakes completely rebuilt with new special linings and new brake drums. New wheel cylinders and new master cylinder. New rear brake actuators.
Complete replacement of chassis lubrication pipes and overhauled Bijur tank.
Body and electrics:
Body is 90% complete. Requires edge wiring to rear panels, fitting of boot lid skin and one door skin. All external panels are made, and all interior panels, floors, transmission panel and bulkheads are made. Windscreen and trim insert are available. Doors fitted with electric window motors. Bentley Continental door handles. All hinging for bonnet, boot lid and doors done. All interior wood trim made, including instrument panel. All instruments included. Seats available. Teak rear deck. Most of the lights and electrical components will come to complete the car.
Complete new wiring loom made, and main control box containing fuse and relay units included.
Very special cars like this do not come to market often. Here is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a totally unique, sporting open top Bentley, at a fraction of what it has cost so far, (the engine alone costing upwards of £40, 000, and the one-off body around £150, 000 when completed), and with all the difficult work already done. As we are building no more, you will not find another.
Price negotiable. We can complete the car at a reasonable agree price, if required. This drophead, fitted to a RHD manual chassis was due to be introduced to Bensport La Sarthe range, but is now surplus to requirement.
