HOWEVER, THE Y TYPE WAS MORE THE CHOICE OF THEIR SUPERIOR OFFICERS. IN ESSENCE. THIS RARE MG Y TYPE IS A MG TD ALBEIT IN A SPORTS SALOON BODY, MEANING THE FAMILY CAN COME ALONG FOR A RIDE AS WELL. THE Y TYPE ALSO SHARES THE SAME RAFFISH MG CHARACTER AND RARER YET THAN THE "T".”

WHEN THE MG Y TYPE WAS LAUNCHED THE MG SALES LITERATURE STATED "A BRILLIANT NEW MEMBER OF THE FAMOUS MG BREED". THE ONE AND A QUARTER LITRE CAR PERPETUATES THE OUTSTANDING CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS SUCCESSFUL PREDECESSORS – VIRILE ACCELERATION, REMARKABLE ‘ROAD MANNERS,’ INSTANT RESPONSE TO CONTROLS, AND SUPERB BRAKING. A ‘LIVELY’ CAR, WITH THE Y TYPE ONE & A QUARTER LITRE PROVIDING HIGHER STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE" .

THE CAR FEATURES AN INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION LAYOUT DESIGNED BY GERALD PALMER AND JACK DANIELS (AN MG DRAUGHTSMAN). INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION WAS VERY MUCH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY AT THE TIME AND THE "Y" TYPE BECAME THE FIRST "NUFFIELD" PRODUCT AND ONE OF THE FIRST BRITISH PRODUCTION CARS WITH THIS FEATURE. THE SEPARATE CHASSIS FACILITATED THE ‘JACKALL SYSTEM’, WHICH CONSISTS OF FOUR HYDRAULICALLY ACTIVATED RAMS BOLTED TO THE CHASSIS, TWO AT THE FRONT AND TWO AT THE REAR. THE JACKS ARE CONNECTED TO A "JACKALL" PUMP ON THE BULKHEAD WHICH ENABLES THE FRONT, THE BACK, OR THE ENTIRE CAR TO BE RAISED TO FACILITATE WHEEL CHANGE.

THE POWER UNIT IS A SINGLE CARBURETTOR VERSION OF THE 1, 250 CC ENGINE USED IN THE MG-TB. THIS ENGINE, THE XPAG, WENT ON TO POWER BOTH THE MG-TC AND MG-TD SERIES. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ROVER TEN, WHICH MANAGED 2 ADDITIONAL BHP, THE "Y" TYPE HAD MORE POWER THAN ALL OTHER BRITISH SALOONS OF SIMILAR SIZE.

THE MG "Y" TYPE HAS AN EXTREMELY HIGH STANDARD OF INTERIOR FURNISHING AND FINISH, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BEST BRITISH TRADITIONS. THE FACING SURFACES OF ALL SEATS ARE LEATHER, AS ARE THE DOOR POCKETS. THE REAR OF THE FRONT SEATS ARE MADE FROM "REXINE", A FORM OF LEATHER CLOTH, WHICH MATCHES THE LEATHER FRONTS, AS ARE THE DOOR PANELS. CONSIDERABLE USE OF WOOD IS USED IN THE INTERNAL TRIM OF THE "Y" TYPE. THE DOOR WINDOWS, FRONT AND REAR SCREENS ALL FRAMED IN BURR WALNUT, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL IS SET IN "BOOKMATCHED" VENEER OFFSETTING THE PASSENGER SIDE GLOVE BOX. THE SPEEDOMETER, CLOCK, AND THREE-GAUGE CLUSTER OF OIL PRESSURE, FUEL AND AMMETER, ARE SET BEHIND OCTAGONAL CHROME FRAMES, A SUBTLE ITERATION OF THE MG BADGE THEME WHICH WAS LATER REPLICATED IN THE MG TF.

THE GORGEOUS MG Y TYPE OFFERED HERE WAS FIRST REGISTERED FROM NEW IN THE UK ON 13 APRIL 1949 AND MUST BE AMONG THE VERY BEST OF THE REMAINING EXAMPLES. THE "Y" IS FINISHED IN PERFECT TWO TONE GREEN. THERE IS A WIND BACK METAL SUN ROOF AND THE WINDSCREEN CAN BE WOUND FORWARD AT IT'S BASE TO PROVIDE FURTHER VENTILATION.

ALL BODY PANELS ARE STRAIGHT AND TRUE. THERE ARE NO DENTS, SCUFFS OR MARKS OF ANY KIND. THE GLEAMING TWO TONE GREEN PAINTWORK IS IN EXCELLENT ORDER PROVIDING A DEEP SHINE. AGAIN, THERE ARE NO SCRATCHES, SCUFFS OR MARKS. THE SPORTS SALOON REMAINS WIND AND WATERTIGHT, THERE IS NO DAMPNESS WITHIN. THE ORIGINAL WHEELS WITH MATCHING "AVON" TYRES ARE IN GREAT SHAPE WITH PLENTY TREAD AS IS THE CHROME WORK. IN ESSENCE, THIS IS A TRULY STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL CLASSIC BRITISH 4 SEATER MG Y TYPE SALOON..

THE INTERIOR IS ALSO IN EXCELLENT ORDER, WITH CREAM LEATHER SEATS AND DOOR CARDS ETC. THE CAR'S INTERIOR IS VERY ORIGINAL, CLEAN AND UNCLUTTERED WITH NO NASTY AFTER MARKET ADDITIONS. THERE ARE NO TEARS, UNSIGHTLY SCUFFS OR MARKS, SIGNS OF WEAR OR DISCOLORATION. ALL IS IN TACT, FUNCTIONING AS INTENDED, COMFORTABLE AND VERY PLEASANT TO THE EYE.

THE CHASSIS AND UNDERCARRIAGE IS ALSO REMARKABLY CLEAN AND SOLID IN ALL AREAS, AS ARE THE FLOOR PANS ETC. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ROT/ RUST ANYWHERE. CLEARLY, THE UNDERCARRIAGE HAS BEEN WAX OILED IN THE INTERESTS OF PRESERVATION.

THE BOOT - AGAIN VERY CLEAN, SOLID AND UN-CLUTTERED.

ENGINE BAY - AS PER THE BOOT.

ENGINE - THE ENGINE IS RELIABLE, AGILE AND RESPONSIVE, STARTS FIRST TIME OF ASKING EVERY TIME. IT SOUNDS JUST AS IT SHOULD THROUGH THE GEARBOX AND EXHAUST SYSTEM.

TRANSMISSION - THE 4 SPEED MANUAL GEAR BOX IS LIKE THE ENGINE, AGILE, RESPONSIVE AND SMOOTH TO THE CHANGE.
