Description
MG L2 1933
A pristine condition L type with an impeccable provenance having been restored and updated by many of the “greats” in the MG world.
This car, KG5416, started life as a “Continental Coupe” but these bodies were not popular and by 1935 the car had been converted to L2 specification. The car was extensively rebuilt in 1983/ 84 by Baynton-Jones for the Swedish Ferrari concessionaire in Stockholm, with a new L2 body by Rod Jolley. It spent some years in Sweden before being returned to the UK in 2006. The new owner undertook further mechanical restoration and improvement fitting a steel rear axle casing, and a total engine rebuild and upgrading by Barry Foster in 2008/ 9. This involved a new long stroke block sourced through the club and given the original engine number / 2 to preserve the “matching number” status. A fully counterbalanced Phoenix crank was fitted with Phoenix rods and shell bearings. David Fletcher Jones (F1 engineering) pistons were fitted, and the engine finished to the highest standards. An Alpine manifold was used as with the race cars and twin 1. 25” SU carburettors were fitted. A full flow oil filter was installed. Full records and correspondence related to both the original restoration and Barry’s work comes with the car. The engine is now 1360cc and much more powerful than as built.
I bought the car in 2021 and sent it to Andy King in 2023/ 4 for a “refresh”. This involved an engine rebuild with new white metal main bearings and shell big ends, new rings and small ends, a replacement clutch, and loads of detail work around the car. Andy also supplied and fitted a close ratio gearbox which suits the car much better than the original, but that gearbox comes with the car. All in all the bills from Andy came to over £15, 000
The car is in delightful pristine condition with its original registration, is on the button, feels quick, and has full weather equipment in unused condition. It is a very special car that needs a very special new owner. For sale due to advancing years!
