The Appeal

People have been modifying air-cooled Volkswagens for over sixty years now and it’s easy to see why. Ubiquitous and simple, Beetles lend themselves perfectly to DIY enhancement and before long, air-cooled performance specialists like EMPI emerged, offering parts and services to ready these cars for racing.

Here we have a lightly modified 1963 1200 Beetle, boasting a number of tasteful period mechanical and cosmetic enhancements. Upgraded to 12 volt, equipped with a twin-carb 1600 cc engine, lowered and fitted with wider rear tyres, this Volkswagen has considerably more performance than new, without losing even an ounce of its classic character.

Presented in very good condition and reportedly ready to be used by its new owner, this is a really fine classic Beetle that we’re sure will be of great interest to enthusiasts.

The History and Paperwork

  • Registered in Italy, with all paperwork apparently ready to be signed over to its next owner
  • 87,190 kilometres indicated, although the vendor is unsure whether or not this is warranted
  • Little is known about the car’s history
  • Supplied with what we’re informed is its original 1200 cc engine

The Interior

  • Largely original
  • Standard seats and upholstery
  • Bamboo parcel shelf
  • Original period steering wheel and radio
  • Period aftermarket SCAT gear lever
  • The vinyl upholstery presents really well, with some gentle patina commensurate with age
  • Slight wear to the steering wheel, pedals and gear lever
  • Seemingly unmodified steel dashboard in very good condition
  • The headlining has some discolouration but is well supported and seemingly damage-free
  • Fitted with hard wearing rubber floor mats

The Exterior

  • Dark beige paintwork in very good condition, with few blemishes
  • The vendor points out the immaculate chromework
  • Smart, straight bodywork with good shut lines
  • The floor pans look to be really solid and quite straight
  • Slight surface rust evident on a few underside components, but nothing that at all concerns us
  • We couldn’t see any obvious signs of corrosion to the bodywork
  • Equipped with period / retro EMPI GTV badges
  • Black steel wheels with no hubcaps lend this car a sporting feel
  • Larger / wider rear tyres compared to those on the front
  • Lowered suspension give it a purposeful stance
  • Mesh guards fitted to the headlamps

The Mechanics

  • 1600 cc twin-carb boxer engine which is apparently freshly rebuilt by a specialist
  • Supplied with what we’re informed is its original 1200 cc engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • The vendor informs us that it runs well and drives really nicely
  • Apparently ready to be enjoyed, with no mechanical work needed
  • No evidence of leaks that we could see
  • The vendor doesn’t report any issues

Summary

This early Beetle has a great look to it. We enjoy the subtle visual enhancements and the next owner is sure to feel the benefit of the upgraded powertrain.

If you’re looking for a retro, tastefully modified Volkswagen, then look no further…
