The Appeal
The 2000 Toyota Hilux ‘Raider’ 3.0 double-cab pick-up is the kind of no-nonsense workhorse that has earned legendary status for its ruggedness, reliability, and go-anywhere attitude. Powered by a torquey 3.0-litre diesel engine, it’s built to take on tough terrain, heavy loads, and the odd weekend escape without breaking a sweat. Thanks to its double-cab layout, this Hilux is just as comfortable hauling gear, towing trailers, or ferrying the family — a rare blend of versatility and durability.
The Hilux Raider is a compelling prospect: not originally offered for sale in the UK, most examples began life in South Africa, as was the case for this car, and they now represent a sweet spot of old-school toughness in a world increasingly dominated by larger and larger, and more high-tech pickups. Unmodified, well-kept examples like this are becoming increasingly hard to come by, and of course, as famously demonstrated by Top Gear, the Hilux’s bulletproof reliability means it should still be salvageable even if you happen to leave it atop an ill-fated tower block, or forget you parked it in the sea — though we’re not advocating that you do!
This Storm Grey metallic example has been in the UK since January 2002 and with the current owner since 2019. In 2023, the owner set about a thoughtful refurbishment to bring it up to a solid, reliable standard. We’re told this included sandblasting and coating the underside and load bed with tough bed liner paint, plus fitting new tyres, suspension, alloy wheels, refreshed brakes, and giving the whole thing a professional clean. And as a Raider, it doesn’t scrimp on creature comforts either — you’ll find air conditioning, electric windows, and side steps. One more thing: it also comes with an ultra-rare factory hard-top roof, available by separate negotiation — a proper rarity as Hilux owners will know.
