The Appeal
Released in 2002, the 998R was an exotic and powerful superbike produced in limited numbers by Ducati for the purposes of race homologation.
Powered by a roadgoing version of the 2nd generation of Testastretta engine, the 998R powerplant featured a larger bore and shorter stroke compared to its lesser 998 siblings, giving it a total displacement of 999cc and a power bump to an impressive 139 BHP.
Built around Ducati’s trademark steel-tube trellis chassis design and featuring their iconic single-sided rear swing arm, the 998R was also a significantly lighter proposition than the standard bikes due to the extensive of use carbon fibre in its body panels.
Bristling with exotic componentry usually only found on the very highest performing race bikes, the 998R also successfully combines the very best of suspension and braking technology, ultimately producing a bike of almost unrivalled ability.
Offered here for auction is a stunning example of a 2002 998R which comes from a cherished superbike collection under its current ownership for the past 5 years. Having covered just over 5000 miles in the past 20 years, this 998R presents in a really lovely condition and shows only the lightest possible signs of use.

Given this particular 998R’s low mileage and current ownership as part of an exceptionally well maintained collection, it’s no surprise to that it presents in a truly excellent condition.
A continuation of the beautiful lineage of bikes first designed by the legendary Massimo Tamburini, the 998R features subtle changes in detail but does not stray from the original elegance of 1994’s 916. With its shape formed by the superb Ducati steel-tube trellis chassis, the 998R is a perfect example of beautiful form following exceptional function.
Presented here in a stunning shade of gleaming rich red paint in a fabulous condition with exposed carbon fibre elements, the 998R truly is a handsome machine and one that is clearly defined by its sole purpose of covering ground quicker than any of its peers.
Differentiating itself from its lesser siblings, the 998R model also features body panels entirely crafted out of carbon fibre, serving to further reduce the bike’s overall weight and aid that constant pursuit for improved performance.
Finishing the intoxicating package and contrasting pleasingly against the red bodywork are a stunning set of 998R-specific lightweight Marchesini wheels, also presenting in a beautiful unmarked condition paired with a set of fully floating front brakes.
The Mechanics

- Superb Öhlins race suspension setup front and rear
- Powerful Brembo brakes capable of delivering ample stopping power
Featuring a chassis and body which make every possible concession to lightness, it should come as no surprise that this 998R homologation special features engine, suspension and braking technology which represented the bleeding edge of technology and engineering back in 2002.
With its increased capacity 2nd generation Testastretta engine delivering an impressive 132 BHP, the Ducati 998R could reach 60 from 0 in an incredible 3.3 seconds and keep going all the way to a mighty top speed of 174 MPH.
With that kind of power excellent suspension and handling are essential and here the 998R yet again does not disappoint.
Fitted with top of the range and fully adjustable Öhlins suspension front and rear the 998R can be set up to perfection and, when the need arises to scrub off some of that considerable speed, the powerful Brembo units are more than up to the task.
