The Appeal

The Harley-Davidson XLCH 1000 Sportster Ironhead is one of the most revered platforms in custom motorcycle culture: raw, characterful, and endlessly adaptable. This 1978 example has been transformed into a striking 'desert sledge' style hardtail bobber through a ground-up build by Tom Winchester, formerly the custom builder at Shaw's Harley-Davidson of Sussex and described by the vendor as one of the county's most respected builders.

Every component has been carefully considered. The iron-head motor has been completely rebuilt, a hardtail frame delivers a low-slung stance, and a bespoke stainless steel two-into-two exhaust runs low along the frame. The finish, a pale grey 1960s Porsche colour paired with raw aluminium, brushed stainless, and satin black detailing, is described by the vendor as cohesive and restrained. Modern touches include Motogadget indicators and a flush-mounted Motogadget Motoscope speedo integrated into the bespoke hand-painted tank, keeping the lines clean and uncluttered.

With new wheels, tyres, brakes, and levers fitted, and a recent service completed, this is a fabulous custom motorcycle built for the road by a well-regarded builder.
