The Appeal
The Rolls-Royce 20hp was the marque's first "small" horsepower model, introduced in 1922 to offer the refinement and build quality expected of Rolls-Royce in a lighter, more manageable package than the Silver Ghost. Intended to be driven by their owners rather than chauffeurs, they naturally gained a much more driver-friendly reputation. Over a hundred years later, the 20hp is a thoroughly rewarding car to tour in, and open-bodied examples are particularly sought after.
This chassis, GMJ44, was originally supplied with a Doctor's coupé body by Maythorns of Biggleswade to the order of Dr. Soutar of Queen Anne Street, London. In the 1960s it was re-bodied by Edmund Metal Works of Plymouth, whose carpenters and panel makers produced a close copy of a Hooper tourer using chassis GHJ8 as a template. The result is a handsome open four-seater finished in Hooper Prussian blue over black with a pale grey leather interior.
Mechanically, the car has benefited from the attentions of respected specialists including West Hoathly Garage, Priory Vintage Car Co, and most recently Carl Ford at CJ Ford Engineering. A full engine rebuild is documented with photographs in the extensive history file, and a substantial service was carried out in November 2022 to ensure everything was right.
Among the notable details is a sterling silver hallmarked clock inset in the rear door, with a fascinating wartime provenance - it was removed from a relative's Jersey-based Rolls-Royce for repair just before the German occupation, the car itself being requisitioned and never seen again.
