The Appeal
The XK150 Fixed Head Coupé was the most refined evolution of Jaguar's legendary XK sports car line. With its one-piece windscreen, wider bonnet, and leather-trimmed dashboard, it offered a more civilised grand touring experience than its predecessors while retaining the potent 3.4-litre twin-cam straight-six that made the XK name synonymous with performance. Today, the FHC is increasingly appreciated for its elegant lines and usability.
This particular example carries a genuinely interesting story. Ordered new by Mrs Ruby Chapman, wife of Ralph Chapman, owner of Britvic drinks, it was specified from the factory to near-complete SE specification, albeit with black steel wheels rather than the wire wheels more commonly associated with the XK150, lending it a distinctly understated character. Also well-known are the next two owners (one a local doctor), also living in close proximity to Chelmsford, as does the vendor, so this has always been a local car.
A Jaguar Heritage certificate confirms it as a matching-numbers car, and the history file traces its life from new, including a buff logbook and handwritten notes from previous owners.
In more recent years, the XK150 has been owned by a Jaguar enthusiast who spent 21 years working for Jaguar main dealer Grange Motors, Brentwood, and now works for a Jaguar specialist. The car was purchased in 2021 and has since undergone extensive sympathetic work. He undertook a full respray after the original paint had deteriorated beyond the point of preservation. He also went through the car comprehensively, replacing virtually every perishable item, including bushes, fuel lines, and rubber seals. It comes with a wealth of invoices spanning many years.
With its known history, matching numbers, and sympathetic refurbishment, this XK150 presents a compelling alternative to the heavily restored examples so often seen today.
