The Appeal
With just 71 D-Types built, of which only 53 were privateer cars, the chances of bagging one, let alone feeling comfortable driving it on the road, are vanishingly rare. Step forward Realm Engineering, which solved the problem with its excellent D-Type replica.
The Realm cars are far more than mere style-driven evocations. Beneath the dimensionally accurate bodywork lies a chassis developed by Formula One and Indy car supremo Adrian Reynard. The running gear is also drawn from Jaguar, generally using 1960s architecture and XK engines.
This superb Realm replica is based on the early, ‘purer’ short-nose D-Type, built in 1954 and 55. It is a beautifully presented example, classically finished in British Racing Green. The attention to detail is impressive - the roundels are in correct Old English White, there’s an engine-turned dashboard, period-correct decals and even scrutineering stickers.
The vendor is a retired engineer and acquired the car in 2022. He tells us that he has thoroughly overhauled the car, prioritising originalityand attending to minor details to ensure everything works correctly. Beneath the bonnet we are told that there is an E Type Series 1 ‘1B’ prefix engine, which records show was reconditioned in the mid-Noughties. Most of the running gear is also E-Type. He has fitted a bespoke stainless exhaust that is said to be similar to the factory cars and sounds fantastic. The history file includes old tax, discs, various invoices and handwritten notes. We’re told this car has appeared at Prescott, Goodwood and Brighton Speed Trials.
The Realm D-Type provides an evocative classic that goes as well as it looks. This much-prized rarity has clearly been cared for and arrives with the buyer in fine order.
The vendor says:
“I wanted to be as close to an original as possible, all classic Jaguar parts etc. without spending millions on a real one. It’s quite wonderful to drive, and it attracts attention from all who see it. It really does feel like driving a Spitfire fighter on the road!”
