The Appeal

Colin Chapman, Jean Redele, and Ferdinand Porsche shared a philosophy: building lighter was better, enabling smaller engines and nimbler cars. All three built their cars using proven, reliable proprietary parts from Ford, Renault, and VW, respectively. The Alpine A110 added beautiful Michelotti styling that has proven as durable as the 911’s profile.

This 1967 A110 is chassis number 6 of the 528 cars FASA built between March 1967 and October 1970. Enthusiasts rate these cars highly because, aside from drum rear brakes, they stuck religiously to the original Dieppe specification. It left the works with the 1,108cc Renault engine but was later upgraded to the 1,390cc motor.

The car arrived from Spain to the UK in 1987 and with its second and current keeper in 1997. It was repainted in white with blue racing stripes in 1999 and remains tidy, though the photos show a few points to note. The same is true of the interior, which retains its correct black bucket seats and smart wood-rimmed wheel.

“It is pure pleasure to drive and never boring. As befits a nascent rally car, it corners as if on rails. The engine's sound never fails to turn heads. It is one of the very first A110S out of Spain and has the chassis number 0006. It is an extremely rare, early example of the A110 design. I have been fascinated by these cars since I was a child (in 1972), and I have never seen another example like it outside of a museum.”
