The appeal

The E-Type 2+2 was introduced primarily to meet the expectations of American buyers. It transformed the British sports car into a true grand tourer that was more practical and comfortable, making it much better suited to modern driving conditions.

The ‘Series 1.5’ models feature a number of improvements relating to safety and comfort. They are particularly recognisable by their retention of the first-generation rear lights, combined with modified headlights.

This body style seems to pair particularly well with the original automatic gearbox, which probably explains why nearly half of 2+2 buyers opted for this feature. However, production of the Series 1.5 remained limited, as this version was only available for a short period. This yellow 1967 model is one of the last left-hand-drive 2+2 automatics produced, among just a few hundred units.

According to the seller, the car has undergone a complete restoration. The bodywork was prepared by milling, sandblasting and phosphating before being repainted, whilst the interior has been refitted with new burgundy leather upholstery.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, all the mechanical components are said to be as good as new. Several upgrades have also been fitted to optimise reliability and driving pleasure: Weber carburettors, electronic ignition, a new radiator, reinforced brakes, a stainless steel exhaust and wider spoked wheels.

The seller states that the car starts easily. However, prospective buyers should note that it has not been driven for around five years and does not currently have a valid MOT certificate. It will therefore need to be roadworthy-tested before it can be used on public roads again.

For an enthusiast wishing to avoid the lengthy and costly stages of a full restoration, this restored and cleverly upgraded E-Type 2+2 represents a particularly attractive opportunity.

History and documentation

  • One of around 500 left-hand-drive Series 1.5 2+2 models fitted with an automatic gearbox
  • The vehicle does not currently have a valid MOT
  • Restoration carried out approximately five years ago
  • The odometer appears to have been reset during the restoration and currently reads 5 km
  • The car has not been used for around five years

Condition

  • Bodywork restored with a full preparation process including milling, sandblasting and phosphating
  • New gloss yellow paintwork, with very little use since the restoration
  • Wider chrome spoked wheels
  • Completely new upholstery, with several bespoke components
  • Refurbished dashboard with a carbon-fibre-effect finish
  • Customised gear selector surround
  • Interior fully upholstered in burgundy leather, barely used since its refurbishment
  • Three windscreen wipers retained, a feature of Series 1.5 models
  • Original three-spoke E-Type-style steering wheel
Restoring a Jaguar E-Type is a complex, time-consuming and particularly costly undertaking. This example therefore offers its future owner the opportunity to enjoy a car on which the main restoration work has already been carried out.

The restoration appears to have been carried out thoroughly and meticulously, notably featuring a superb yellow finish. Externally, the car remains largely true to the original, apart from the fitting of wider chrome-plated spoked wheels.

The fully refurbished burgundy leather interior has hardly been used since it was refitted. It also features several personalised touches, such as the finish on the dashboard and the surround of the gear lever.

The mechanics

  • 4.2-litre (4,235 cm³) XK inline six-cylinder engine
  • Three-speed automatic gearbox
  • All mechanical components advertised as new
  • New radiator fitted
  • Weber carburettors fitted
  • Electronic ignition fitted
  • Upgraded brakes fitted
  • Stainless steel exhaust fitted
  • The seller states that the car starts up correctly
  • It may need to be run in before regular road use
  • The car appears to have seen very little use since the restoration was completed
The 4.2-litre XK engine, paired with the three-speed automatic gearbox, is perfectly suited to the 2+2 version’s grand touring philosophy. These cars were designed to cover long distances in superior comfort.

With its fully refurbished interior, this restored example is particularly well suited to long-distance journeys.

It also benefits from several relevant upgrades designed to enhance its reliability and driving pleasure: Weber carburettors, a new radiator, electronic ignition and an upgraded braking system. The stainless-steel exhaust, meanwhile, gives the famous Jaguar six-cylinder engine a more expressive sound.

As the car has covered very few miles since its restoration and has been off the road for around five years, a few checks and a gradual return to service are to be expected before hitting the road again.
