The Appeal
The 109" Station Wagon is among the most coveted of all Series Land Rovers, combining the rugged versatility of the long-wheelbase chassis with the relative comfort and carrying capacity of the fully enclosed body. The 12-seater configuration is rarer still, and this particular example is one of the very last Series IIA models to feature the distinctive headlights mounted in the metal grille, a detail lost with the 1968 facelift that followed shortly after.
This vehicle has been in the hands of a dedicated Series Land Rover enthusiast and engineer for over 25 years, and the depth of care and considered improvement is evident throughout. The engine was rebuilt by Turner Engineering to a high-performance 8:1 compression ratio specification with a lead-free cylinder head, while a later Series III synchromesh gearbox and an overdrive unit have been fitted. Free-wheeling front hubs have also been added. Fitting of a new ignition system and a carburettor overhaul have been recently completed.
Perhaps the most characterful addition is the pop-top camper roof, fitted by the Dormobile Company, which transforms the Station Wagon into a capable touring vehicle. Complete with a roof vent, two skylights and two full-length bunk beds, it has served as a much-loved family camper on long-distance holidays across Europe and as a daily family car for many years. The interior remains tidy and complete, with all internal body panels, seats and flooring present, and the removable second-row and rear bench seats offer a vast loading bay when required.
Reportedly barn and garage-stored, the bodywork is complete and appears structurally solid, with the underside reported to be clean. A heritage certificate from BMIHT accompanies the V5C, along with prior MOT certificates, receipts and a box of spares. For those seeking a usable, well-sorted and characterful Series Land Rover with genuine touring credentials, this is a compelling proposition.
