1969 Porsche 911 3.6-litre RSR Coupé Recreation

Highlights

  • Rebuilt 3.6-litre 964 engine by Porsche Classic Centre Son, only 6,000 km since completion
  • Lightweight RSR fibreglass body on a 1969 chassis
  • Handsome Blood Orange livery (Code 6809)
  • Conversion approved and documented in the Norwegian vehicle registration
  • 930 Turbo brakes, Bilstein Race shocks, rebuilt 915 transmission, and bolt-on roll cage

The Appeal

Introduced in 1973, the 2.8 RSR was a factory-built Racer based on the 911 chassis. These weren't conversions, though - they were purpose-built competition models designed and built to conquer the track; a true dyed-in-the-wool, thoroughbred competition car.

Today, the Porsche 911 RSR is one of the most revered silhouettes in motorsport history, and well-executed tributes offer an accessible route to experiencing that raw, lightweight character without risking one of the incredibly scarce original cars. This particular example, built on a 1969 chassis and finished in Blood Orange, combines a fibreglass RSR body (with steel roof retained) and a comprehensively rebuilt mechanical package to create a road-legal lightweight suited to spirited road driving and track days alike.
At its heart sits a 3.6-litre 964 engine rebuilt by Porsche Classic Center Son with just 6,000 km covered since completion, running the stock Motronic ECU and fuel injection system. Power is fed through a rebuilt 915 transmission fitted with a short shift kit, all-new bushings, and a fresh clutch. The conversion has been approved and noted in the Norwegian vehicle registration, and a copy of the California title accompanies the car. If you're looking for a purposeful, lightweight 911 RSR tribute that's begging for the circuit, this impeccable car warrants serious consideration.

The vendor adds:
"Although a capable track car, it is just as happy on the road, and recently returned from a 2000km european road trip."

History and Paperwork

  • Built on a 1969 Porsche 911 chassis
  • A copy of the California title is included, suggesting prior US history
  • Conversion approved and documented in the Norwegian vehicle registration
  • Currently registered in Norway
  • EU-Kontroll exempt following 50-year-inspection
  • Odometer reads 30,054km
  • The vendor reports this includes 6,000km covered since rebuild
  • Import duty will need to be paid by the buyer if exporting the car from Norway at the buyers local rate

The Condition

  • Fibreglass body with steel roof, finished in Blood Orange
  • RSR door sides with stripped interior
  • Southbound RS lightweight carpet set
  • RS-style adjustable seats with 4-point seat belts
  • Bolt-on roll cage with welded-in mounts and removable side protector bars
  • 6-point cut-off switch cutting DME, power, and grounding the alternator
  • Braid 9" and 11" RSR Fuchs wheels with Michelin TB5 road-legal tyres
The vendor adds: "The interior retains full carpets to add a degree of comfort and usability rather than a stripped-out, full-on race RS-style adjustable seats; chosen both for correctness and comfort versus a more performance-oriented fixed bucket seat. [The car also features] removable side protector bars or full front cage for a more daily driver experience. "
Refitted upon a 1969 example of the Porsche 911, this examples RSR style focuses on reinvigorating the legendary car's character to suit the exclusive, sports-focused nameplate. From top to bottom, it's been rebuilt and refinished to create a fantastic recreation of the legendary sports vehicle.

While the steel roof has been retained, the rest of the body makes use of lightweight Fibreglass, which has then been finished in the scarcely-seen Blutorange (Blood Orange) from the period's Porsche colour palette. As you'd expect from a car that has covered a respectably low 30,000km since the work, it's clean and well-presented with all of that sporty persona you'd expect.

Internally, the car boasts a stripped-back, lightweight cabin that's fitted with a bolt-on roll cage and removable side bars, while the lightweight seats and racing cut-offs are all present and correct. It's deeply evocative and with performance to match!

The Mechanics

  • 3.6-litre 6-cylinder engine, taken from a Porsche 964, with stock Motronic ECU and fuel injection system
  • Manual 6-speed transmission
  • Rebuilt by Porsche Classic Center Son, 6,000 km since completion
  • Rebuilt 915 transmission with short shift kit, all-new bushings and clutch
  • 930 Turbo brakes front and rear with brake booster, turbo master cylinder, and body strengthening modifications
  • 964 fuel pump
  • New RSR headers with Dansk RSR adjustable sports exhaust, road legal
  • Front strut brace
  • Aluminium rear trailing arms with adjustable sway bars
  • Bilstein Race shocks
The vendor adds: "Rather than a highly strung, performance-built motor, a stock M64 engine was added for usability, reliability and ease of maintenance."
It's clear that this car has been specc'd out and designed with the driver in mind. From top to bottom, this thoroughbred acts the part, with a rebuilt transmission, a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder taken from the ever-popular, ever-enduring Porsche 964. We're told that it's running as it should, with a soundtrack befitting the RSR's visceral personality.

Further fitted out with components from the Porsche 915, 930 and 964, it's a remarkable build, and we've little doubt that the car's lucky new owner will find it an impressive beast on the track.

Import duty will need to be paid by the buyer on export from Norway at the buyer's local rate.

A Short Road Trip in the 1969 Porsche 3.6 RSR The Journey: Oslo-Kiel ferry (24.06), driving started 25.06.26. • Leg 1 (Kiel-Krefeld, ~500km): Driven in a German heatwave. The car ran flawlessly; oil pressure and engine temps stayed perfectly stable. • Day 2 (Gallery Aaldering, NL): A fantastic pilgrimage for classic petrolheads. Return drive went without a single hitch. • Day 3 (Nürburgring): Brisk Autobahn pace. The Nordschleife was closed due to heat/queues, but the car stole the show, getting massive attention for its 3.6L setup. Over lunch in Adenau, experts noted you couldn't build this car for the asking price today. Finished with a great dinner at Pistenklause. • Day 4 (Home): Krefeld to Lübeck, zero issues. Conclusion: ~2,100 km entirely trouble-free in 35°C+ heat by my son and me. Out of all the Porsches I’ve driven in Germany, this analog machine attracted the most attention. Pure driving pleasure in every mile!
