The Appeal
Were we to time-travel this remarkable Mk1 back to 1973 and the day it was collected from the showroom, likely the owner wouldn’t recognise it. He might even be a little frightened. It began life as a 1100L but we’re a very long way from that now. Today it’s an extremely capable Mexico replica with a specification that exceeds the factory cars by a country mile.
The car has been extensively restored, including a repaint in Mexico-aping blue with decals and stripes, and sitting on smart anodised grey Superlights. Beneath the bonnet and body lies a very long list of improvements including a 2L Pinto with 205 block, Type 9 gearbox, big tunnel conversion and twin 45 Dell’Ortos. Inside, there is a set of RS2000 dials and a pair of OMP Contour seats in front of a roll cage.
This car is a wonderful homage to all that is great about the brilliant Mk1. It combines many desirable features and improvements, and looks huge fun for any Escort fan.
