The Appeal
In the 1970s, Yamaha was one of the first brands to bridge the gap between trail bikes and competition-oriented motocrossers. The DT range was topped by the DT400, which was powered by a 397cc two-stroke, air-cooled single-cylinder engine with reed-valve induction and a distinctive radial cylinder head. The traditional suspension provided long travel, while the drum brakes worked well even in dusty or wet conditions.
This 1974 example was imported to the UK from the USA, and has matching frame and engine numbers. Recently, it was converted to a 12-volt electrical system, and a new headlight assembly and dip switch were fitted, along with electronic ignition for the engine. At the same time, the engine and fuel tank were flushed through, and rust removed from the fuel tank. Otherwise, it is highly original, and wears a pleasing patina throughout.
The motorcycle’s yellow fuel tank and side panel are bright, with period-correct decals. The seller states that the motorcycle “starts and runs well”. This is a fine example of a genre-defining ‘bike that is ready to provide a new owner with all-terrain enjoyment.
