The Appeal
The 911 SC holds a significant place in the Porsche 911 lineage. Launched in 1978 with the robust 3.0-litre flat-six, it marked a return to a single, unified 911 model after years of increasingly complex range fragmentation, and quickly earned a reputation for mechanical durability that endures to this day. Early examples like this one, registered in late 1978 as a 1979 model year car and thought to be one of the last to leave the factory with chrome window surrounds, sit at a compelling crossroads between the classic narrow-body look and the more modern SC era.
This right-hand-drive example was supplied new to the UK and comes verified by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming matching numbers. It is accompanied by a history file stretching back to 1978, with mileage corroborated across the service book, MOT records and invoices, we are told. The current owner has had the car since 2008, during which time it has reportedly been dry-stored throughout and covered fewer than 7,000 miles.
This is not a concours car, and it is presented with refreshing honesty. The Petrol Blue Metallic bodywork shows cosmetic ageing including lacquer deterioration and paint blemishes, while the interior carries the patina of a 47-year-old unrestored classic. Crucially, however, the vendor reports that a recent ramp inspection confirmed the underside to be largely original and very solid, with only one small area of corrosion noted in the rear left wheelarch. For anyone seeking a solid, honest air-cooled 911 to recommission, sympathetically improve or simply enjoy, this one merits serious consideration.
