The Appeal
Lovers of ‘unexceptional’ classics, may we have your attention. Here we have the proverbial needle in a haystack. It is an unmodified, highly original 1979 Renault 18 GTS with just 7,808 miles from new.
Renault’s 18 was once a common sight on UK roads. However, today, there is only one 18 GTS currently road registered here. So, even if you take this to its natural home, the annual Festival of the Unexceptional, you’re unlikely to see another. We’ll wager that of all the surviving Renault 18s in the world, this one could well be amongst the best and perhaps the least used too.
Renault’s 18 was developed quickly to replace the perennial 12. It followed a similar template of stylish three-box design with rugged mechanicals and a firm focus on soft ride and big, comfortable seats. For those not drawn to the tyre-scrabbling Turbo, the GTS was the top specification model equipped with the A-Type 1.6L carburettor-fed engine, a useful 5spd gearbox - other models made do with four cogs - and luxuries like electric windows and central locking.
Finished in bright red with grey velour interior, this exceptionally low mileage car looks like it rolled out the showroom a few months ago. It is a proper ‘timewarp’ car which retains its original features such as factory radio, humble steel wheels and even the supplying dealer sticker in the rear window.
It has clearly been well looked after by its five keepers since new. We wish this characterful Gallic gem well for its new life with its lucky buyer.
