The Appeal
Few low-volume British sports cars capture the hand-built charm of a Marcos, and the 1983 Marcos GT sits firmly in that tradition. Produced during a period when Marcos offered its cars in kit form to satisfy demand and keep costs accessible, these coupes combined dramatic styling with lightweight construction and Ford-derived V6 power. As a result, they delivered vivid performance and rarity in equal measure. The vendor notes that this example is “one of perhaps only 130 coupe kit cars produced between 1981 and 1990,” adding that it may be rarer still due to subtle specification differences seen on later cars.
Originally supplied as a kit and professionally assembled (with documentation to support this), this car was first registered in August 1989 and has covered a modest “16,704 miles,” according to the seller. Power comes from the characterful 3100cc V6 paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, driving the rear wheels in true analogue sports-car fashion. The seller advises the engine has benefitted from a “professional 1st, 2nd and 3rd stage revision/upgrade,” while the car also carries a valid MOT until August 2026. Finished in Maroon paintwork over a two-tone beige and brown interior, it presents as an honest driver’s example rather than a concours piece; the current keeper describes it as “not cosmetically perfect (i.e not showroom condition),” yet the leather trim, suede seats and overall interior condition appear well preserved, reinforcing its usability.
Equally appealing is the car’s documented life and careful stewardship. With five former keepers and in current ownership since 2021, the seller says it “has been stored in a dry garage since,” adding that it had also been “kept off the road, and in a dry garage for ten years before our ownership.” An extensive four-year restoration is reported to have been carried out, partly by the owner and partly by Marcos specialists, and we’re told the car comes with a substantial history file and restoration photographs. Riding on 15-inch alloys with Yokohama tyres and featuring details such as dual exit exhausts, this Marcos GT offers the rare combination of documented provenance, mechanical upgrades and unmistakable presence; a compelling proposition for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive, low-production British sports car with genuine character.
