The Appeal
With the Mk2, the Golf GTI grew up, but only in the sense that it just got much better. Far more usable than the original, yet without losing any of the sheer, revvy chuckability, these are the cars that sealed the seminal hot hatch’s legend.
This 1986 example has spent its life in the dry, inland climate of Gauteng Province, South Africa before being imported to the UK in 2025. The result, we’re told, is a body including underside, arches, sills, and floor pans that remain structurally factory-original and corrosion-free. Retained by its original owner until 2023, it was then acquired by a local enthusiast who commissioned a VW specialist in Johannesburg to carry out a comprehensive programme of mechanical and cosmetic work, including a respray. On completion it was imported to the UK around 18 months ago.
The car is now fitted with a long block 2L 2E 113bhp engine from a later Mk3. There are a few points to consider improving inside, but otherwise it presents well and looks very usable. As an added bonus, the car is now exempt.
The vendor says
“This is a rare opportunity to own a 1986 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 imported directly from South Africa. Thanks to spending its life in a hot, dry climate, this vehicle boasts a level of structural integrity and rust-free bodywork that UK-market cars can very rarely match. Tthis car balances highly original charm with tasteful modern updates. Being from South Africa, the car was reading distance and speed in km so as part of the commissioning process for UK roads, on arrival a used replacement speedo/odometer binnacle was fitted. This now reads 166,720 miles whilst the original SA km reading was 253,925km (which equals 157,782 miles) so car has done similar but slightly less mileage than now displayed in miles.”
Key Information
- Mileage: 166,720 miles displayed indicated (see vendor description above)
- Country of registration: Imported from South Africa 2025, now UK-registered
- Technical inspection status: no MOT, MOT exempt
- Technical specs: 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol (2E series long block), 5spd manual transmission
- Paperwork: Little to no service history available; details of specialist work carried out in Johannesburg in 2023/24 were provided by the previous South African owner
The vendor says
“The car was imported by me 18 months ago from inland Gauteng Province. The original owner had kept the car until 2023 when a local enthusiast bought it. He commissioned a local VW specialist in Johannesburg to build the car to his own specification. The original 1.8 litre engine was replaced with a new long block engine, a 2.0 litre unit from the later Golf GTi Series 3 model.
“The reliable, trusted Dictator MP9 engine management system was fitted, along with a Vernier pulley and 276 cam. Adjustable coilover suspension was fitted, along with a new bespoke exhaust system. Wheels & Tyres have just been upgraded with stylish, multi-spoke Calibre alloy wheels wrapped in new 195/45R16 high-performance tyres. Since arriving in the UK, it has always been stored indoors and only used very occasionally for attending local car shows, etc. The weakest point of the car is the interior, with the driver's seat bolster having split on the seam and in need of repair to the fabric, something which I never got around to doing.”
