The Appeal
It's rare to find a Land Rover Defender without a diesel engine. Most non-diesel examples have Rover V8s, which is all well and good until you get your wallet out at the fuel station kiosk... This 1990 Defender 110 is unusual in having a Land Rover smooth, quiet and comparatively economical 2.5-litre petrol engine, effectively a stroked version of the late-generation, 5-bearing 2.25 engine that powered Series Land Rovers for decades.
The car carries an interesting backstory, having originally served as a Field Ambulance before its roof was converted to its current configuration by a previous owner.

In the current owner's hands since 2014, this Defender has been put to proper use, covering long-distance trips from London to Scotland and across to Burgundy through Champagne. Land Rover specialists have handled maintenance, and the service history is on file. The vendor notes some undiagnosed engine knocking and a slightly rich-running condition, offering the next keeper an opportunity to investigate. The vendor describes it as a lovely vehicle deserving of continued care and enjoyment.
The vendor says:
The vendor says:
"Most Defenders are diesel, and most of the rest carry the thirsty Rover V8. This 1990 110 has the rarer 2.5-litre petrol four: smooth, quiet, and a development of the long-stroke engine that powered Series Land Rovers for decades. It began life as a field ambulance, and a previous keeper later converted the roof to its current form. It spent a long period off the road before the vendor bought it in 2014, which accounts for the modest mileage. Since then, it has been used as intended, with trips from London to Scotland and to Burgundy via Champagne, and has been maintained throughout by Land Rover specialists.
"It is honest rather than restored. It has an undiagnosed engine knock, a slightly rich mixture, and some corrosion to the rear crossmember and roof rack. Both faults are photographed and described below. It is being sold only because the vendor now needs room for a baby seat.'"
