The Appeal
Before modern iterations moved away from its utilitarian origins, the original Range Rover spent over two decades offering peerless off-road abilities alongside an ever-increasing portfolio of luxury accoutrements. By the time this late first-generation model rolled off the production line, Vogue SE trim had pushed the Range Rover into an entirely different market from the one first anticipated.
As soon as you open one of the doors on this preferred Vogue Tdi SE Auto model, you enter a world of timber and leather. In tandem with the huge greenhouse windows, sitting here feels elevated in every sense of the word. All the classic Range Rover traits are present on this well- preserved model, including the split tailgate and double-decker door carpeting. The leather seats have coped well with thirty years and 66,000 miles of use, albeit with some cracking on one of the driver’s seat bolsters.
The Avalon Blue paint has worn the years impressively well, though there are various surface marks and chips across undented body panels, reflecting any Range Rover’s working brief. Wear is entirely in keeping with the car’s age, such as a missing bolt across the front bumper, while the underside of the bonnet is shedding its insulation. At the other end, the tailgate is showing signs of wear and would benefit from some attention. In the last three months, maintenance and restoration work worth almost £7,000 has been completed by a local Land Rover specialist, with all invoices provided to verify work from replacement headlights to a new swivel joint housing.
Mechanically, this is a typically unburstable Range Rover, with its 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine barely run in at this mileage. According to the current owner, it “starts easily, runs smoothly, and drives well with no major issues”, remaining “factory-standard with no performance modifications. Overall, it feels solid, well maintained, and ready to drive”. They conclude that it benefits from a rare combination of originality and mechanical integrity which “makes it an excellent example for both enthusiasts and collectors alike.”
