The Appeal

The Peugeot 406 is remembered as one of the most sharply styled large saloon cars of the 1990s, with crisp Pininfarina a lines, a sublime ride quality and impressive dynamics.

Once described by Autocar as “The best family car in the world, by a considerable margin”, the strikingly handsome four-door was once a common sight on British roads. But ask yourself this – when did you last see one? Especially a pre-facelift car as smart as this one?

It’s a totally original, timewarp car and currently forms part of the vendor’s sizeable collection of nineties and early 2000s modern classics, but due to some imminent life changes he’s downsizing the fleet, so keep an eye out for other cars of a similar ilk on Car&Classic over the coming weeks.

This one is about as posh as a 406 got, albeit without the flagship 3.0 V6. Instead, it’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder model, but it’s in top-op-the-shop Executive trim and has gorgeous fluted leather seats, air con (which blows icy cold), cruise control, wood-style trim, remote locking and four electric windows. Back in ’98, that was as posh as things got.

Owned by its first owner for over 20 years, it was then sold privately to a second keeper from whom the vendor acquired it almost three years ago to add to his collection. It’s a reluctant sale, and whoever buys it will be getting one of only 12 of its type remaining on British roads, based on the latest DVLA data.
