The Appeal
The Mk5 Golf GTI revived the spirit of the original hot hatchback, pairing a responsive 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four with sharp handling and genuine everyday usability. It also proved to be a formidable platform for tuning, with the BWA engine responding handsomely to forced induction and forged internals. This 2006 example has been comprehensively built to deliver serious performance while retaining its road manners.
At the heart of the car is a fully forged engine producing 400bhp. The bottom end features forged pistons, forged con rods, and a reground and balanced crankshaft, with the internals rated to support up to 700bhp. A ball bearing 67mm hybrid turbo feeds through an HPA inlet manifold and Grams 70mm throttle body, while a Track Slag 3.5-inch downpipe and 3-inch Milltek exhaust handle the gases. The engine was rebuilt approximately 6,000 miles ago and has been walnut blasted and recently serviced with Millers Racing fully synthetic oil.
The gearbox has also been recently rebuilt, now fitted with a Wavetrac LSD, new solid driveshafts, and a Sachs dual-mass flywheel paired with a four-paddle racing clutch. Underneath, Koni shocks and springs combine with polybushed front arms and a chassis brace, while RS3 front ceramic brakes and drilled Mtec rear discs are fitted. The car sits on genuine 19-inch Audi Speedline split wheels.
Inside, the cabin has been refreshed with a black suede headliner, re-trimmed door cards and steering wheel, and a CarPlay head unit. The vendor reports the GTI tartan seats are in very good condition with no rips or tears. Stored over winter and run exclusively on super unleaded fuel, this is a thoughtfully built and conscientiously maintained GTI that could serve as a spirited weekend car or a capable daily driver.
