It’s been over six decades since Sir Alec Issigonis decided to augment his iconic Mini by removing most of its bodywork and turning it into a cross between a beach buggy and a wartime jeep. Christened the Moke, production has continued sporadically ever since, and this particular Moke C was manufactured in France by Moke International. One of a 2020 production run of just 56 vehicles, it has been with its first owner since December 2020 – though this is unquestionably a car made for summer. 

Moke branding recurs everywhere from the rev counter and huge central speedo to the steering wheel and mud flaps. It’s certainly more Moke than Mini – from the sides and rear, following drivers would have no idea this vehicle with its rear-mounted spare wheel and canvas awnings originated from a Mini. Only the front end hints at this car’s heritage, with those iconic circular headlamps mounted onto a bonnet resembling a post-war off-roader as much as a Mini, right down to twin leather bonnet straps and the use of early Land Rover light housings. 

The Jeep similarities don’t end there, since the Moke truly comes into its own when you unzip the beige canvas and enjoy al fresco motoring, free from such encumbrances as doors or rear windows. The swathes of exposed Honolulu Blue paintwork are in excellent condition internally, with one-piece seats and Moke-branded rubber mats contributing to the rainproof nature of this uniquely sun-seeking car.
