The Appeal

Built for just five years and so often the basis for backdate projects, it's remarkably rare to find an original 964-generation 911, let alone one so fine as this 1990 example: a Carrera 4 Targa. Indeed, the 964 C4 Targa holds a special place in the 911 lineage as the last to feature the traditional lift-out Targa panel before Porsche moved to a sliding glass arrangement. Finding one in a colour as striking and seldom seen as Tahoe Blue only sharpens the appeal.
This UK-supplied example was delivered new through the Porsche Centre in Norwich in April 1990 and has covered 113,700 miles from new across six registered keepers. The vendor reports that the car wears this mileage far better than one might expect and describes it as a very complete and honest example that is solid, composed and mechanically honest on the road.

The Condition

  • Tahoe Blue paintwork described by the vendor as presenting very well, with a consistent finish throughout
  • Silk Grey interior with factory sport seats fitted to both sides
  • Green tinted windscreen
  • Correct flag mirrors and D90 wheels retained
  • Targa roof panel reported to be in very good condition and lifts out easily
Finished in Tahoe Blue, a shade that photographs well but really comes alive in person, this Targa presents as an honest, well-preserved example rather than an over-restored showpiece. The Silk Grey interior with factory sport seats is the spec enthusiasts actually want: correct, driver-focused, and increasingly hard to find in this condition. The details that matter to the discerning eye are all present and correct: green-tinted glass, flag mirrors, and the original D90s still on the car rather than swapped for something flashier. Even the small tells check out: a Targa panel that lifts out smoothly, rather than fighting you, says a great deal about how the car's been stored and maintained.

The Mechanics

  • 3.6-litre flat-six engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • All-wheel drive (Carrera 4)
  • Top-end engine rebuild carried out by Nelson Porsche in 2013
  • Recent servicing and remedial work completed by GT One
  • The vendor reports the engine and gearbox feel notably tight
In this spec, these are some of the best-driving 911s.  A delightfully analogue naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six is paired with a five-speed manual: a combination that rewards spirited driving chiefly due to the reassurance of all-wheel drive. The top-end rebuild, carried out by Nelson Porsche back in 2013 adds considerable reassurance, and recent servicing and remedial work through GT One keeps that story current rather than historic. The vendor reports that the engine and gearbox feel "notably tight", and an advisory-free MOT to August 2027 shows this to be a very well-sorted 911.
