Pre-bids

1966 Porsche 911 S

Highlights

  • 911 S SWB with 160 hp, highly sought after by collectors
  • One of only 1,823 coupés produced
  • Restored in its original Ivory finish in 2011
  • Complete overhaul of the engine, gearbox and running gear prior to restoration
  • Car with few owners, originally delivered in France

The appeal

For discerning 911 enthusiasts, it all starts here. The 911 S, built on the SWB platform from 1967 to 1969, was the first Porsche offered in a faster, livelier and more stable version. This car introduced an innovation that would prove decisive for the later evolution of the line and its image as the archetypal sports car. It was also the first to be fitted with that quintessentially Porsche accessory: Fuchs wheels.

The S received a pair of Weber 40 carburettors that raised output from 130 to 160 hp. Brake discs improved stopping power, while a stiffer anti-roll bar sharpened the handling. Only 1,823 coupés were built between 1967 and 1969, each fitted with a five-speed "dogleg" manual gearbox, offered as an option.

This example was delivered new in France through Sonauto, Porsche's official importer in France, and is believed to have had relatively few registered owners during its life. It received a mechanical overhaul in 2009, and its bodywork was restored in its original Ivory finish in 2011 following damage. With 38,521 km shown on the odometer, the car is described as being in good overall condition, although the seller indicates it would benefit from further refurbishment to reach a higher standard.

For the knowledgeable Porsche enthusiast, this is an opportunity to acquire a rare, sought-after classic 911 with French history and scope for a sympathetic restoration.

History and paperwork

  • Registered in France
  • Delivered new in France by Sonauto
  • Chassis number: 306546S
  • Reportedly had relatively few owners since leaving the factory
  • Bodywork restored in 2011 following damage
  • 38,521 km shown on the odometer (total mileage potentially higher)

Condition

  • Coupé bodywork in SWB configuration, series 0
  • Restored in its original Ivory finish in 2011
  • Paintwork in very good condition, with a few minor blemishes to note
  • Original Fuchs wheels in good condition, with a matching spare wheel
  • Black interior with sport front seats
  • A few light marks on the roof lining
  • Period radio fitted
The very first 911s come closest to Ferdinand Porsche's vision, if only through their SWB architecture. This format demands skill behind the wheel, yet makes these some of the most beautiful of all air-cooled versions, with a remarkable aesthetic balance.

This car was restored in its original Ivory finish in 2011. Externally, the chrome elements are presentable and the Fuchs wheels specific to the 911 S are in good condition. Inside, there is an elegant black cabin with sport front seats, the original steering wheel and a period radio.

Mechanicals

  • 2.0-litre flat-six engine in S specification, producing 160 hp
  • Weber 40 carburettors
  • Five-speed "dogleg" manual gearbox
  • Mechanical overhaul of the engine, gearbox and running gear carried out in 2009
Light and with 160 hp sent to the rear wheels, the S ranks among the most entertaining cars of its era. This one underwent a mechanical overhaul in 2009, reportedly covering the engine, gearbox and running gear. It is believed to have covered only a few miles since.

BEFORE YOU BUY
This sale is subject to Car & Classic's terms and conditions. By bidding and/or making an offer, you also accept the following:
✓ The seller is registered as a private seller, meaning that consumer rights under European consumer protection legislation do not apply. However, you are still covered by Car & Classic's terms and conditions.
✓ We require non-refundable fees to be paid if you are the successful bidder or if your offer is accepted. Please refer to our FAQs and terms and conditions for the specific rates.
✓ This vehicle is "sold as seen", on a "as is, where is" basis and without warranty. Photos and descriptions are provided for guidance only, and it is customary to carry out a full inspection of the vehicle before purchase for your own peace of mind.
✓ VAT is included in the buyer's deposit. VAT may or may not be included in the final offer or bid price, as specified in the listing.
✓ We want the transaction to go smoothly, just as you do, which is why cars and motorcycles registered in the UK and listed on Car & Classic are subject to an HPI check to confirm that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft and are not subject to outstanding finance, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as written off following a total loss at the time the listing is placed on Car & Classic and we provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) to help you. The presence or absence of a label does not, however, guarantee the vehicle's status, and it is always worthwhile carrying out a full vehicle history check before making an offer on it.
✓ Buyers are responsible for collecting or delivering the vehicle. Importing vehicles may incur additional customs duties and import taxes. If you wish, we can recommend a third-party transport company that can help. For more details and to speak to the team, email auctions@carandclassic.com.
