This Corvair is a time warp example having resided within 40 miles of G. M.’s Antwerp plant in Belgium where it was assembled from CKD form in April 1960, the present owner imported it into the U. K. just over 3 years ago when it was issued with the dateless 952 UYR registration number. The coachwork has been resprayed in the original colours some time ago, one will find a few blemishes externally, the substantial chrome is in good condition. The interior is original and shows very little wear which really makes the car, a true survivor. The 80 bhp 2, 296cc rear mounted air cooled flat six aluminium petrol engine starts instantly and emits a lovely deep thrum similar to a 70’s Porsche 911.
These early Corvair 700’s are getting very rare now worldwide especially in the U. K. in this original condition. They offer superb practicality seating 6 people in comfort with room for luggage in the front bonnet trunk. One can own this for a fraction of the purchase and running costs of a large Chevrolet such as an Impala but get a similar look and ownership experience, the steering does not even need to have power assistance due to the low front weight, narrow tyres and low gearing. The design offers some unique features such as the large curved rear window with overhanging roof and the lovely louvers on the engine cover. The styling also features an overall low silhouette and flat passenger compartment floor, the vehicle is a lot longer and wider than one would think.
