Description
1993 Ducati 888 SP5
1993 was the final year of production for the model range that had virtually saved Ducati from extinction, the revolutionary 851/ 888. With 1994 planned for the release of the now famous 916, Ducati left nothing in the locker for the SP version of the final 888 SP5.
The 888 SP5 was predominately based on the preceding, and now incredibly rare & expensive, 888 SPS, Ducati’s highest-ever spec WSBK racer. As a consequence, every exotic piece of equipment found on the Bologna shelves went into the SP5, including the highest performance SPS engine which enjoyed twin injectors, pankl con-rods, and close-ratio gearbox.
For the frame & suspension, the former changed from white to bronze, as did the wheels change from black to the same Brembo bronze. Showa developed a one-off front fork assembly, and carbon Termignoni cans replaced the former in-house aluminium units of the SP4. The rear brake changed from solid to fully floating, and both ends received braided-steel brake lines. While Ducati has continued with their marketing strategy of producing limited race-orientated builds, enthusiasts and Ducatisti believe the 888 range of SPS models were the ‘real-deal’, far harder-edged, loud, cantankerous, a genuine road-going race bike. Moreover, unlike later ‘limited production’ models, far fewer number of the 888 SPS example were produced. Only 500 888 SP5’s were produced, making them rare and among the best machines money could buy in their day.
Located here in Australia, this beautiful example is build #145 and presents in spectacularly original condition with only 15, 743k’s use. In preparation for selling it’s been dealer serviced, new plugs fluids & filters, but also new cam belts, new battery and new fuel pump. The fuel injectors were removed and tested, & test docs show all were in perfect condition with excellent spray pattern & displacement.
The bike is sold with its original Austrian registration documents & owners handbook with full service history for the minor k’s travelled.
