SUMMARY
In the twenty years I’ve been involved with Classic Cars, and as an eternal optimist, you always find yourself looking for that elusive “Golden Goose” that is “the Perfect Car” but you soon learn, these don’t really exist. Well, I thought that until last February, and after twenty odd years of searching, this is as close to perfect, by quite some margin as I’ve ever seen, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s impeccable in every respect and is probably the best S-Type available. I count myself as quite a decent photographer of cars after all these years, but try as I might, I can’t get my photos to do this one justice. There are similarly priced low mileage examples out there, but none, stress none, can hold a torch to the outstanding condition, quality and provenance of this instant show winner, and one which also, in my opinion, wouldn’t be out of place in a museum. If there was ever a car even the most discerning buyer could comfortably buy unseen (and I say this quite sincerly) this is it.
Bought new in 2001 from Minster Jaguar, Leeds, by a then retired gentleman from it was ordered in the beautiful colour combination of Seafrost Metallic with Almond Leather, and specified with numerous desirable and expensive extras which included;
* Heated Seats
* Parking Sensors,
* Heated Windscreen and
* CD Autochanger
* Electric Tilt/ Slide Glass Sunroof
* Climate Control
* Electric Memory Seats
* Wood/ Leather Steering Wheel & Veneers
All this came in at the not so insignificant cost of £32, 000; the original Sales Invoice being included in the extensive history file to verify this.
During the tenure of essentially its only owner, the car has been kept in the same heated garage throughout its entire life, only covering between 1000 -1500 miles per year, and used solely for high days and holidays, but serviced way beyond what was reasonable required. However towards the end of the owner’s life, the use dwindled to hardly anything and in 2014 he sadly passed away. As the car was her late husband’s pride and joy and part of his memory, his widow was somewhat reluctant to part with it, so it remained, unused and covered, in the same heated garage for a further five years, until the elderly lady sadly had to go into a care home in 2019. It was at that point the family had to sell the car, so that the house could be put on the market, and it was subsequently secured by a local and long established dealership, which re-commissioned it, and retailed the car (for more than I’m asking here.)
So, in December 2019 it was bought from the dealership by a long time Mercedes Club member, who by his own admission bought it on a bit of a whim, after becoming totally besotted by its condition, however just weeks after taking delivery, he saw an equally low mileage E-Class that I was advertising, and as a “Mercedes Man” through and through, decided he wanted and should really have that instead, so after some too and fro’ing a deal was eventually struck, and on one of the very few dry days we had in early February, I had a rather pleasant day out delivering the E-Class to the West Midlands and somewhat cautiously (given its condition) bringing this beautiful Jaguar back home to West Yorkshire, where it originally began its life in 2001; less than 5 miles away from where I am!
Although I’ve had quite a few Jaguars over the years, mainly XJ’s and XJ-S’s and was also a member of the JEC (Jaguar Enthusiasts Club) for some years, this is the first time I’ve really driven an S-Type over any significant distance, and I have to admit to being very, very impressed; the S-Type certainly lives up to its reputation as quality car and a true Jaguar. Being a Mercedes Specialist and enthusiast of many years, I always find myself drawing comparisons between the equivalent Mercedes model, and I have to say although the W210 and S-Type are more or less a match for each other in most departments, the one area that Jaguars always seem to excel in, is that they all, without exception, exude a sense of occasion, which I think is down to their almost palatial interiors, and frankly make Mercedes Interiors of the same vintage seem almost functional and dour and a tad boring in comparison.
So, there you have it, quite probably the very best example of its type; I always say “probably” in the unlikely case there’s a similar car out there that’s been stored in a vacuum chamber for 19 years. Like all ultra low mileage cars of this age, there have been a periods of inactivity; it’s simply impossible to have such low mileage of its age without it, but the advantage here is this car has been stored correctly and has already been re-commissioned, and covered a few hundred miles since, to shake down any potential issues. You can look at this vehicle in two ways, the first as a cheap brand new car, or secondly and much more likely as a future classic and a piece of British motoring history. The S-Type has all the credentials to make it a classic, and like all radical Jaguar designs, they get better with age, and mature almost like a fine wine or good cheese. As a result, I think, as many others do, that the X200 S-Type will be a classic, in fact according to a Jaguar contact of mine, values of the S-Type have bottomed out some time ago, and are on the rise.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
Thanks for reading my advert!
Mark.
