History of the 1963 - 1966 Alvis TE21
The Alvis Three Litre Series III, more popularly known as the TE21, first appeared in late 1963 and it represented a refinement of its TD21 predecessor. As with the older model, there was a box-section chassis and a steel body with an aluminium boot, bonnet and roof made by Park Ward.
The Alvis TE21 was available as a two-door, four-seater coupe or two-door, four-seater convertible with a front engine and rear-wheel drive.
The body was 1 modified version of the TC 108G styled by Graber of Switzerland but built by Mulliner Park Ward and is distinguished by having twin headlights mounted one above the other. The design was noted for its lack of bright side trim or creases moulded into the body parts. The windshield was one-piece, curved and not too highly sloped.
There were independent front coil springs and wishbones with an anti-roll bar and rear semi-elliptic leaf springs with telescopic dampers and recirculating ball steering. Power steering became optional in late 1964.
The 2993 cc engine, first used in the 1950 TA 21, received a modified cylinder head and manifold which increased power to 130 bhp (97 kW) at 4000 rpm giving the car a top speed of 107 mph (172 km/ h). A choice of automatic or five speed gearboxes made by ZF was available. Disc brakes were fitted to all wheels.
Although the car was replaced by the TF 21 in 1966, the TE 21 was still in stock and "available to special order" until 1967.
Alvis TE21 and TF21 rivals range from the Bentley S2 and S3 Continental and the Bristol 407 and 408, to the Jensen 541S and CV8.
