Description
1938 Alvis 12/ 70
Chassis #19123 | Engine #15647| Registration #CAX223
There’s nothing quite like a VSCC special that’s been built with the singular aim to win. CAX223 ticks that box three times over! As the winner of the Hulbert Memorial Trophy three times, it has vindicated Duncan Fish’s vision to be both Constructor and Driving champion.
Upon retirement from his day job, Duncan embarked on his last big adventure – one that has kept him occupied and given him huge enjoyment and lifelong friends since 1984.
Duncan chose the Alvis 12/ 70 over the Riley 12/ 4 because it made for a really authentic special – with its low slung chassis and 1842 cylinder capacity. It was this, the
powerful 12/ 70 engine that benefited from reduced weight in comparison to Alvis’s previous four cylinder models – which gave the car very spirited performance.
His 1938 car is an especially sure-footed one, and is currently configured to focus on Sprints and hill-climbs. The top-speed on this car is significantly higher than the standard 80 mph, thanks in part to the 100bhp now being pushed out with the aid of its super-charger.
Expect some very lively acceleration by the standards of the day, too. Consistent care has been lavished to this car’s drivetrain and components. The camshaft was reprofiled making new followers and pushrods by Newman’s. It’s also been fine-tuned on a rolling road by Road Sigma Engineering. Engine tuning and Supercharger design was created by Peter James of Troll Engineering.
This all adds up to a great set of ingredience. Add to that a full synchro gear box and hydraulic brakes, and you begin to see why Duncan and CAX223 have been such a formidable force in the VSCC Hill-climbs and sprint environment.

So why has CAX223 come to the market?
Well, after all of the above, we remember that we’re only human. Cars will break, but they can always be fixed. Sadly we humans can’t be fixed as easily as our cars. We don’t always listen to our bodies as well as we would with a slight knock or rumble with a car. To that end CXX223 is Duncan’s legacy, and a warning to us all to have our PSA levels checked. We will be donating part of our commission to prostate cancer, once a sale is concluded.
