In the long history of the automobile, there has arguably been no more versatile car than the 911. In rallies and on the track, this has been the car to beat. The 911 began its quest for victory using a 2-litre engine, until the arrival of the 2. 3 ST in 1970 presented the ideal weapon against lighter and more powerful rivals. The competition department at Zuffenhausen sold ST kits for the 911S. There were rally and sports kits, but teams could also buy individual parts, which is how this Porsche 911 ST was born. Its history, outlined below, has been passed to us by the current owner who has carried out extensive research on his car. Salvatore Patamia, a young gentleman driver from Calabria, dreamed of racing a Porsche like one he had seen in the Targa Florio, and in 1972, bought a second-hand 2-litre 911. Built in March 1969, this 911 was silver with a black leatherette interior and options that included rear wiper, tinted windows and Recaro sport seats. Carlo Noce, the director of the Sportwagen workshop, suggested to the owner that the car would make a good basis for an ST. The engine was uprated to 2. 5-litres with special pistons and cylinders, a silumin crankcase, a higher flow injection pump, dual ignition, forged connecting rods and special camshafts. The engine was also connected to a new 915 gearbox that was stronger than the 901 and 911 versions. The car was stripped of all non-essential parts to reduce the weight and the front and rear tracks were widened as was the bodywork. Salvatore Patamia made his debut in the newly prepared 911 at the San Giustino-Bocca Trabaria hillclimb in August 1972. Encouraged by a few small successes, he signed up for the Targa Florio while continuing to make improvements to his ST, fitting magnesium Campagnolo wheels that were lighter than Fuchs or Minilites, and adding a new RSR bumper. His outing in the Targa Florio ended in a retirement, after which Patamia lent his car to Romano Bartoli to participate in the Trento-Bondone. Unfortunately, the 911 ST suffered some damage in the process and Bartoli had to buy the car and repair it.
He sold it soon afterwards to Odoardo "Dino" Govoni, a driver of some note. Between 1974 and 1976, still supported by the Sportwagen team, the car continued to compete on the track and in hillclimbs. In 1977, it was entrusted to "Autorlando", a new business created by Orlando Redolfi. Numerous races followed and included a brilliant 11th place in the Mugello 6 Hours, part of the World Championship of Makes. By 1978, although the 911 ST had reached retirement age, Dino Govoni decided to enter the Giro d'Italia Automobilistico for the next two years, finishing 27th in 1979. The car was finally put back into road-going configuration and Dino then sold it to Arturo Rizzoli, a young Autosprint journalist, who drove around for a few years before putting the 911 ST away. In 2005, a classic car enthusiast discovered the car exactly as the last owner had left it some twenty years earlier. It still had its gold Campagnolo wheels, front bumper with holes for the oil cooler and plexiglass windows and will be delivered with a set of 4 magnesium wheels. Aware of the car's glorious past he decided to bring it back to its original ST specification. Today this Porsche 911 ST is fitted with a 2. 5-litre 260 bhp engine, a 915 gearbox and the conserved body featuring the modifications allowed by the homologation papers FIA 3025 (911ST) then 3053 (911 Carrera RS / RSR). Benefitting from full and transparent history, this racing Porsche 911 is one of the most authentic cars available on the collectors' market.
