What fun - finished in glossy Embassy black with brown hide trim, this 7 seater Limo is an excellent example of the hard to find FL1. Produced by Austin for hire car use with 4 doors rather than the 3 door version FX3 London Cab, the Austin FL1 was made after the war and built for 10 years between 1948 and 1958.
The FL1 was the private hire version of the FX3 London taxi and was commissioned from Austin by taxi dealers Mann & Overton and built by Carbodies of Coventry on a chassis supplied by Austin.
The 4 cylinder Austin 2. 2 litre petrol engine with a 4 speed manual gearbox is based on the Austin Atlantic and was also used in the much loved Healey 100/ 4.
It is exactly the same as the FX3 vehicle with petrol engine, same chassis and interior as the classic taxi with the same brown hide seating. However, the seating arrangement differs in that the pop-up seats face forward rather than flip down in the cab – a much nicer way to travel. It has 4 full doors, a bench front seat, floor mounted gearstick and an umbrella-type handbrake handle. The valuable registration number MFJ 399 is transferable.
Other features include: tinted glass, spotlight, opening windscreen, centre glass division screen.
This example was supplied new to its first owner by AC Bulpin of Newton Abbot. The second and last owner purchased the car in 2001 and restored it from 2001-2003, and it was offered to us as part of a deceased estate.
The history folder includes: current V5, show guide A4 laminates, DVLA paperwork, DVLA paperwork, workshop manual, parts listing book, running and maintenance book, Austin book and receipts, envelopes and folders. This rare motor car would be great as a wedding car, show car or part of a vintage collection.
