The Renault 5 Turbo 2 was an upgraded version of the Renault 5 Turbo, which, with 160 bhp turbocharged mid-engine, was nothing short of a missile on the road. Unveiled in 1982, the Turbo 2 had the same engine but, to allow for a more affordable price tag, it featured the interior of the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo and was fitted with steel doors and roof (instead of aluminium). Practically speaking, it matched its predecessor 100% in terms of performance.
This vehicle's service record tells us that it was delivered new on December 1st 1982 by the Renault dealership in Argenteuil, near Paris. The current owner, a sports car enthusiast, bought it less than two years later. He enjoyed getting it out on the road for about ten years before putting the Turbo 2 to rest in order to work on other sports cars. It wasn't until 28 years later, in 2021, that our collector decided to bring the car out of its long slumber and entrusted it to the Bourgoin Classic garage for maintenance, as he did with the rest of his collection. As the vehicle was very carefully stored, the work was focused on the mechanical aspects, including replacing the timing system, rebuilding the turbo, the braking system, and the exhaust manifold, and replacing the tyres. In the passenger compartment, only the driver's seat foam and the headliner have been replaced. This R5 Turbo 2 has only covered 50 km since the work was finished and has 68, 680 km on the clock; it'll be up to the new owner to break in the engine! The production of the Renault 5 Turbo 2 was limited to 3, 167 vehicles, making it all the more special to find such an authentic and well-preserved car that has been in the hands of the same owner for over 40 years!
Auction estimate: €60 000 / €90 000
