The Appeal
As an army of home builders and experienced professionals can attest, the original 1.8L MGB always benefits from more power. With no factory V8 roadster ever built, the best choice for those seeking factory-sanctioned authenticity is the torquey MGC with the Austin Healey-derived BMC C-Series 3L straight-six engine.
These rare cars - just 4,542 were built - got close to a 50% power hike over the standard car. They are more grand tourer than sports car, their long-legged, comfortable demeanour being perfectly suited for classic touring.
Here is a highly original, matching-numbers 1969 C that retains its correct factory Mineral Blue over black leather colour combination. It was restored some years ago but has spent much of the intervening period in dry storage as part of a private collection, so it has been little used. The result is a very tidy car that presents well in the usual check areas. There is a large history file documenting the restoration and the retention of evocative details, such as the old tax discs. Recent work includes carburettor overhaul and engine tune-up. We are told the car runs with good oil pressure and steady temperature.
Despite being MOT-exempt as a Historic Vehicle, there is a useful recent 2024 test that shows no structural advisories. Enthusiasts are rediscovering the C, and this honest example has the originality to stand out.
