Description
Chassis # 06114426
BMIHT certificate shows completion July 1950, and delivered to Murkett Brothers Limited Huntingdon. The car still carries that original issued registration of HEW460.
This isn’t just any series one, its is in fact a very rare aluminium bulkhead model, each of which had a bespoke, hand crafted aluminium version of the rust prone steel bulkhead. It is well documented, for a 3 week period an number of cars were built this way whilst the steel press was broken.
The first keeper shown on the original buff log book as G T Picton ltd of Huntingdon the company is still trading today and following calls with the family, HEW460 is still fondly remembered.
The last entry in the aforementioned buff log book shows HEW460 located in Birmingham December 1969. From there the ownership trail goes cold, until our vender took delivery around five years ago post restoration enthusiast.
The purest aficionado may well pass this by due to the incorrect colour, and that the galvanized areas have been painted silver! As a lifestyle enthusiast, who wanting a sound useable rare series 1 to enjoy, and may be do events like Goodwood Revival camp site run, then I’m not sure you’ll find a better one. The chassis seems to be sound, she drives well, the 1. 6 petrol engine doing as she should. Our workshop has just replaced the brake master cylinder as the car has been inactive the last 4 years.
The series 1 holds fond memories for me personally as ”the families modern car was a 1954 hard top S1 petrol” with split fold tail gate we even had a heater. I remember wax oiling the chassis every summer holiday mum still has the number plate on her modern car, she eventually upgraded to a 90 petrol. When HEW460 arrived it was school holidays and my three kids adopted HEW460 for off road adventures, play den and trips around the farm estate just because it was fun, and that’s why everyone loves a S1 it makes your soul happy there just fun.
