Project Adder, as the RV8 was known during the development phase, came to fruition at the end of 1989 following the successful re-introducion of the MGB bodyshell by British Motor Heritage. The concept was discussed of building a new car using this shell as a starting point. Into 1990 and the idea rapidly began to gain momentum once the management had given the project its blessing, following further positive market research. The formation of Rover Special Products in early 1990 facilitated the “new” MGB’s development without compromising concurrent Rover saloon car projects. The brief was clear – build a new MGB using as many in-house parts as possible and keeping within a budget of just £5 million.
The Heritage shell needed no structural modification and the choice of engine was clear, the 3. 9-litre version of the “Rover” V8 engine would fit the brief perfectly. New front and rear wings were fashioned to accomodate wider tyres and to give the car an appealing, curvaceous, wasp-waisted style.
This particular car was supplied new to Japan, and is in excellent condition having been cherished by the current and the long term UK previous owners, both of whom are known to us as long standing customers. Finished in sought after Woodcote green, the car has been dry stored for most of its life and is shows, the extremely low mileage may well be genuine judging by the MoT history but we have none of the records from it's time in Japan.
The car performed extremely well on test with lusty performance and precise handing and would make an ideal long distance tourer.
