Description
The Triumph TR7 occupies a unique place in British motoring history. Conceived as the bold successor to the traditional TR sports car lineage, it brought dramatic wedge-shaped styling and modern engineering to the marque. Today, the very best examples are those that combine the distinctive character of the original TR7 with the performance and drivability enhancements enthusiasts have always desired. This November 1981 registered example represents exactly that philosophy.
Finished in striking Bordeaux Metallic Red and complemented by the iconic tartan cloth interior, this is one of the last TR7s produced before the end of production. Registered in November 1981 and having had seven previous owners, the car has benefitted from careful stewardship throughout its life and presents as a wonderfully usable and highly developed example.
In January 1996, the car underwent a comprehensive conversion to full TR8 specification, including the installation of a Rover SD1 V8 engine together with the correct TR8 subframe, instrumentation and suspension components. Further enhancements have since been carried out, with the V8 now breathing through a Holley 390 carburettor mounted on an Offenhauser inlet manifold, complemented by a stainless steel sports exhaust system and Mallory electronic ignition. The result is a characterful and responsive V8 soundtrack coupled with strong performance that transforms the driving experience.
Power is delivered through a Borg Warner Type 66 automatic gearbox, professionally installed by a recognised TR specialist. During the gearbox conversion, the engine was also tuned by the same company, creating a well-matched and refined powertrain package that is ideally suited to both touring and spirited driving.
The chassis and braking systems have received equally thoughtful attention. Austin Princess twin-pot front brake calipers have been fitted to improve stopping performance, while the original 13-inch wheels have been replaced with period-inspired 15-inch rims, reflecting modifications commonly seen on contemporary competition and rally-prepared TRs.
More recently, the previous owner invested significantly in the car's reliability and usability. An EZ electric power steering system was installed last year, making low-speed manoeuvring effortless whilst retaining the engaging character of the car on the move. Additional maintenance work included the installation of an overhauled brake master cylinder and servo, a new fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, radiator, water pump and associated hoses, together with rerouting of the fuel feed line and other preventative maintenance measures.
Accompanying the vehicle is an impressive history file containing previous V5 documentation, a substantial collection of invoices detailing servicing and maintenance work carried out over many years, together with an extensive MOT history record. The car has also been part of Club Triumph ownership, further reinforcing its enthusiast background and long-term care.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the final TR7s built, enhanced with a well-executed and long-established TR8 V8 conversion, extensive documentation and sensible upgrades that make it an enjoyable and practical classic for modern roads.
