Launched in the UK in September 1969 following the huge success the Mustang GT in the US, the Mk1 Ford Capri was marketed as “the car you always promised yourself”. The top of the range driver’s choice was the 3000GT powered the legendry 3L V6 Essex engine and a 4-speed manual. The sleek 2+2 coupe developed over 138bhp, 0-60 in 9. 6 seconds and a top speed of 113mph.
During my ownership I have spent a substantial amount on the vehicle as it was my intention to keep it forever. I spent many years looking to find the right 3000GT in an original factory silver fox paint colour as that was the colour of the one in the original 1970's Ford TV adverts and sales brochure.
THE CAR
An original, low owner, low milage, factory 3000GT and a highly desirable example of a quintessential British 70’s fast Ford. Presented in her original factory colour of “Silver Fox”, optioned with a factory black vinal roof, matte black bonnet and Rostyle wheels.
First registered on 10th February 1970 and enjoyed by its first keeper until 1979 when the car was purchased by a Capri Club member in the local area. Judging by some accompanying literature in the history file, the car appears to have attended several Capri Club events during his ownership. In 2004 the vehicle was acquired by Lord and Lady Wharton of Warwick (both listed as the last 2 separate registered keepers) and remained with the same family until I purchased it in 2021.
The vehicle is accompanied with a history file of MOT’s and other paperwork dating back to 2008 (with milage figures back to this date checked against DVLA records - see below). Sadly, the original paperwork prior to 2008 has been lost.
MECHANICS
In 2023 decided to commission a comprehensive and professional mechanical restoration by the well-respected Brightwell Motor Company in Hockley. The vehicle was overhauled from front to back and major works included the refurbishment of the electrical systems, gearbox, suspension, cooling system and breaks.
A full half-life service including an engine, differential, coolant and brake fluid change, new plugs, belts, filters, bulbs, front & rear brake service together with new front/ rear shock absorbers and top mounts was also undertaken. The wheels were professionally rebalanced/ aligned and new wheel nuts fitted. The vehicle also benefits from a stainless-steel exhaust system and period correct 13” Rostyle wheels.
At some point during the previous ownership the engine was reported to have been rebuilt by Frank Griffin, a V8 specialist in Warwick and is in fine health.
BODYWORK
A solid, rust-free example. The body panels, chrome and paintwork are in good condition and present very well with a few minor age-related marks as to be expected with a 50-year-old original car.
INTERIOR
The interior seats are finished in black vinyl and are in excellent condition with no rips or tares. The black carpets are also in excellent condition. The Capri comes fitted with all the usual “GT” factory interior extras including the classic centre console analogue clock.
SUMMARY
Overall a highly desirable 3000GT and a great example of this 70’ GT icon. She presents beautifully in her original “Silver Fox” and matte black colour scheme and turns heads everywhere she goes.
I have always stored the car together with the other vehicles in my collection at a private, secure de-humidified specialist vehicle storage facility located near Rochford, Essex.
The car has been very well cared for and maintained to the highest standards during my ownership and has never been driven in the rain/ snow or on salted roads during the winter. As I mentioned before, it was my intention to keep this particular 3000GT for ever as they are now almost impossible to find in this condition, with the factory UK RHD 3L Essex V6, 4 speed manual specification and in the original factory ‘Silver fox’ launch brochure colour. However, sadly due to a forthcoming house move to Ireland and subsequent lack of private garage space, I am forced to make a reluctant sale.
