The Appeal
When Ford found itself struggling both on track and in the bitterly fought hot hatch wars of the 1980s, it didn’t mess about: it launched the RS Turbo. Homologated for Group A and with VW’s rejuvenated Golf Mk2 in its sights, the new car immediately catapulted Old Henry to the front of the competition.
The Series 2 car stuck to the boosted formula but added a plush interior and revised aesthetics. These later cars are becoming increasingly popular amongst enthusiasts with most now restored to show standard, and commanding appropriate prices. Here is a rare chance to bag a car and add some value in the process.
The vendor bought this Mercury Grey car in early 2023 as a project for completion. Since buying it he tells us that he has spent hundreds of hours on it, work that has included a full engine rebuild, overhauling the turbo and metering unit and welding the floors. The full list of details is provided below. Much of the mechanical and structural groundwork has been addressed, and the car now awaits an enthusiast with the time and determination to bring it across the finish line. It has been off the road for approximately 16½ years and further work is needed to return it to roadworthy condition.
The vendor says:
“After four years of ownership, the time has come for me to let this amazing car go.
This is not an easy decision. Unfortunately, I'm getting older and I've reached the point where I know I won't be able to finish the project. I'd much rather see it completed by someone who shares the same passion for these iconic cars than have it continue to sit unfinished.
“These cars are becoming increasingly rare, and finding one that has had this level of investment is not easy. I genuinely believe it deserves to be finished properly.
I'll be sad to see it go, but I'd much rather it went to an enthusiast who will complete what I've started and enjoy it for years to come.”

You say it’s had a full engine rebuild, when was that and is it converted to run on modern fuel?

Looks like there is a lot of fabrication and welding needing done on the underside floor pans, sills and chassis rails by the looks of the photos, is that the case? Does the sunroof tilt and slide correctly? How is the sunroof carrier, mechanism and drainage channels?
