Description
1962 Mk 1 Triumph Spitfire4
After a lot of soul searching, we have decided that it’s time for Sybil, our 1962 Spitfire4 to find a new home and custodian. Sybil was built in December 1962 and registered in January 1963, the 813th car made.
She is not a show queen, but a sound car, restored 17 years ago. She is one of the most recognised round tail Spitfires, many adverts and some books featuring a powder blue Mk 1 are of her, as photos are held in various photo libraries.
The car had a body off restoration which was completed in 2008, just in time to go to France for the Le Mans Classic. The tub was very poor, so was replaced with another Mk 1 tub, the chassis and bonnet are those which came with the car.
The car was restored to a good roadworthy condition, it is not and was not intended to be a concours car; the chrome work is original, unrestored.
The seats are original Mk 1 Seats (not original to the car, as the originals were blue according to the heritage certificate) with original covers, some stitching on the driver’s seat needs to be repaired.
The car has a few features not found on slightly later cars as production methods were improved. She has the earlier longer rear wing chrome trim and original B post cappings, also the very early passenger grab handle.
The car is fitted with a later overdrive gearbox – the MK 1 did not have an overdrive option, so that this is not an obvious alteration, the overdrive is operated from a foot switch.
The car drives nicely and is ready to be enjoyed by a new owner who can decide whether to keep it as it is or to bring it up to a higher standard if that is their wish.
Please note, the current odometer reading does not tally with the MoT history as her speedometer was faulty so has recently been replaced with another Spitfire4 one with a lower odometer reading.
